If I'm not mistaken, they only did this for a chunk of the fall 98 tour. The band didn't know what they were playing until they got out there and saw it at a few shows.

Given that those shows are such gems in the grand scheme, I wouldn't mind them doing it again for a chunk of another tour

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Bela Fleck write the 12.3.98 set list?

Yes.

Ben folds did a cool thing at a show last week. About half the set was determined by songs fans wrote on a piece of paper, folded into an airplane and threw on stage.

That was a long-time rumor that ended up being false.

I've personally read an interview with a roadie done back in 1998 where he says the crew writes the setlist. Justifies it by saying the band can focus on playing music while the crew can note the crowd reactions.

I've never heard the bela fleck rumor before.

Not sure I believe that Dave ever gave up that control for more than 1 or 2 shows

Interesting, not sure whether it’s true or not but you couldn’t go wrong back then writing a setlist. Would be curious what the crew would come up with these days if they had to write the set. Probably better than what Dave scribbles down half the time. Of course there’d have to be that stipulation that they can’t put anything on the setlist that would require the band to “practice their instruments”. Too much to ask I guess

If fans wrote the sets for the band, I don't think we would be too happy with the results.

Realistically, taking into account DMB Family plus older fans, I think it would look something like this:

Warehouse
What Would You Say
Dreamgirl
Crush
Satellite
Cornbread
So Right
Shake Me Like a Monkey
Old Dirt Hill
So Much To Say >
Anyone Seen the Bridge >
Too Much
Break Free
You Might Die Trying
The Last Stop
What You Are
Grey Street
Stay
__________
Sister
You & Me
Ants Marching

I've often wondered, what if they played one set for a whole tour as many artists do. Would you rather have what we have now or the same setlist every night? A great set that never changes in a tour, or the way it is now with down nights but not knowing what you might get?

Is this for real? There's no way anyone in here would prefer the same set. Part of what makes seeing DMB live is the whole "trying to guess what's coming" element. That makes the show for me. Pretty much the only bands I go see live now are the ones that change it up a lot every night (Phish, DMB, Dead and Co, etc.). I hate going to shows knowing what's coming next, that's the worst part. As good as some of those big time acts are (Springsteen, McCartney, etc.), it really sucks to know what's coming.

The sets these days aren't that bad actually when I look back in retrospect. If they literally put in 1-3 rarities a night that would be enough to satisfy us at this point. But looking back at '16-'17, the sets really weren't that bad--a lot of really great heavy hitters every night. I think the last two years the sets have been much better than some years..like '05, '07 and even '12. The key is really limiting the duds, and placing the duds in good spots in the set...like in the middle after a great run.

This would only work if you are seeing one show per tour only.
