Love M2M. Mantis is not only a great Umphs record (my favorite of theirs), but it's also a great album on its own.

Made To Measure was essentially the UM song that got me hooked in 2008. I had been listening to Anchor Drops quite a bit that fall and whenever M2M surfaced that was the clincher.

Always cool to see a 5 song set, very rare these days. Looking forward to giving this one a listen this week

So smooth. Absolutely love when this tune gets the treatment

I'm not a big jam band guy, but I just came across a couple of free live albums by these guys, and having seen this thread I thought I'd check them out. I'm currently listening to an all covers show from 4.12.14, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Opened with them doing a sort of mash-up of Exodus and Life During Wartime, and that's just a great idea that worked better than I would have expected. So, I guess, thanks for talking them up here so I was motivated to check them out.

I'm not a huge jamband guy either, but I love Umphrey's. What I find different about them is how they really don't get meandery like other jam-bands I know. They'll still have 30 minute epics, but within those long songs there'll be several seemingly composed sections which will actually have been created on the spot. But it's like listening to several small songs that have branched off of the main one.

Also their creativity with set-list construction and trying stuff just for the hell of it is, while maybe not unmatched, really rare.

I'm not huge into jambands as well and find that the overarching style of improv that UM brings just does it for me. It has a very structured and to the point feel. They occasionally venture into the weird spacey territory and really stretch things outs (which I also enjoy a lot when it happens), but I like the engaging, relentless nature of their typical jamming. I know that's what tends to make them less popular with fans of the more organic jamming style, but I think they're perfect for somebody who likes extended improvisation, without it going too far off the rails.

The annual Hall of Fame release was just announced for 2014, and it's an absolute doozy. These are wonderful releases for those who don't delve deep into the shows as they're happening. Fan voted, which often kind of leads to a lot of gems being left out unfortunately, but they nailed the selections this year. Plus it's almost 4.5 hours of music. I was lucky enough to see 4 of these live, and have listened to most of them and can assure that this is going to be a killer release.

Set I:
August (13:33) 04/19/14 | Stubb’s BBQ, Austin, TX
Bridgeless > (19:04) 11/01/14 | House of Blues, Boston, MA
Den > (6:09) 11/01/14 | House of Blues, Boston, MA

Front Porch (17:00) 11/08/14 | Orpheum Theatre, Madison, WI
Where Is My Mind? (3:58) 11/08/14 | Orpheum Theatre, Madison, WI
Onward & Upward (23:18) 05/03/14 | Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY
Cemetery Walk II (14:53) 10/22/14 | House of Blues, Cleveland, OH

Set II:
Wappy Sprayberry > (13:35) 07/05/14 | Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO

Syncopated Strangers (3:38) 04/10/14 | Revolution Live, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Driven to Tears > (3:53) 10/22/14 | House of Blues, Cleveland, OH
Cleveland Jam > (7:54) 10/22/14 | House of Blues, Cleveland, OH
Hurt Bird Bath (16:49) 10/29/14 | Forum Theatre, Binghamton, NY

I seem to recall reading that after each show, they review the performance and discuss what worked/what didn't and then tweak things for the next show. Imagine if DMB did that?

You really owe it to yourself to check them out at least once, man...their live show is awesome and the music/playing top-notch. Pull up some vids on YouTube.

There's a free official soundboard of one of the Chicago shows from last year up here:

[Only registered users can see links.]

That was my intro to them a few weeks back, and I'm definitely getting into them. There's also an all covers show up on that site.

Yeah, the covers show is a lot of fun, and has Otiel Burbridge, Warren Haynes, Eric Krasno and a few others guesting.

I also found three of the sbd matrix releases from the official site on Archive.org, apparently by permission. The ones I found were 12/30/05, 12/31/05 and one from '08 that I can't quite remember the date of. I'll try to dig up the links.
