Please don't compare anyone to the Counting Crows.

I can only imagine this was the conversation leading up to the new Mumford and Sons album:

"How can we live up to our break-out album? What do we need to do next?"

"How about we do the same thing, but with less energy and better production value? It's what everyone seems to like."

"Ok, but could we switch up the song structures?"

"No, identical song structures."

"What about the cadence, I think we have a lot of potential writing songs that aren't one big march."

"No. Same cadence. Just softer."

"The whole album has to be like this? We can't do ANYTHING new?"

"You may write one unique song, but it has to sound like the Avett Brothers."

"Deal."

listening to the album? not too long.

also thank you for assuming that took a while, makes me feel clever.

also it's spot on accurate, but for clarification, I don't dislike the album at all, just from an objective standpoint, it's nothing new.

Finally listening for the first time.

I understand what others have said in that the album sounds like a continuation of Sigh No More, but these songs are heavier IMO. I am really digging it. Love the horn sections.

Broken Crown is an instant fav.

Goes to show what good marketing and spotify can do for an average album.

I like it and I don't have spotify or pay any attention to the radio or any other marketing.

yah I don't see how that had anything to do with it. Their first album was well-received and they produced a second one that was by and large the same writing so naturally it was also well-received.

I dig the new album.

For anyone who hasn't already, check out the Lumineers album. If you like Mumford, you will like it.

Just listened to the new Mumford for the first time. I'm kind of "meh" about it. It all sounds the same. Not necessarily a bad thing because I like their sound, but its just so lacking in complexity or something. The songs that jumped out at me were Lover of the Light, Hopeless Wanderer, Below My Feet, and the bonus track For Those Below.
