Also, it sounds like trash. Doesn't help that you can't touch the original, though.

It was fun.

Spoiler:
As an Aerosmith fan (they were my first ever concert, Sweet Emotion closing that encore was, and still is, to this day, the loudest thing I've ever heard,) nothing compares to the original. I compare it with saying Zac Brown covering Ants Marching 'sounded good'....but you can't beat the original and never will, so why try?

I know i'm nitpicking on opinion and such, but man, it's just not the same....and, on top of that, when you largely ignore your own catalog, busting out an old cover, I can do without.

Yeah that is a great tune, but I feel if you're gonna cover something, put your own touch on it (ala Watchtower), otherwise a straight-up cover (like this and Running Down a Dream), while great songs, I might as well be listening to a cover band in a bar, or preferably just listen to the fucking original.

This 100%^. On top of that, DMB isn’t really a great cover band nor do I go to shows for that. I much prefer when Phish covers songs, they’re good at it and have always done it. I feel like Dave’s voice is too unique and the makeup of the band also too unique to really do covers justice. Though I do think they nail Sledgehammer pretty well.

I think DMB used to be great at identifying songs to cover and doing it justice.

Watchtower
The Maker
Winona
Montgomery
Cortez

are really really strong covers.

Don't much care for the covers they've been playing the last decade, though.

Totally agreed. And as Mitch pointed out, those covers are all ones that DMB put their own flavor to. While they are covers, they almost sound like originals with how they play them. They also fit the bands sound. The newer covers don’t seem to fit—they’re too “rock band” based and that’s just not who DMb is even though they’re trying to be.

I don’t disagree with any of that. But the more recent covers are still fun. The only one I disliked was Kashmir which was awful.

Of all the covers in rotation I think Sledgehammer is the worst one, I dont know what it is about it but its just dull to me.

Interesting, that one they play pretty spot on to the tee. I think The condition of Dave’s voice does really make it or break though. If he’s off, it’s bad.
