Letting this sink in, I gotta say, as excited as I am about some new possibilities, there a few things that will undoubtedly be upsetting about this. Seeing them play Ants Marching, Lie In Our Graves, and Billies, without Boyd, will kind of hurt. Even with the skrees and everything, he's been the highlight of those songs for 20+ years. Not just sonically, but in stage presence. I'm actually not sure I want to see some other violinist join the band and take those solos. It just won't be the same, and it'll be impossible to ignore. Roi had zero stage presence, so it's a bit of a different animal in those cases.

There’s no DMB song that absolutely needs a violin anymore. He’s basically been absent/useless for years. The band could easily fill his parts by splitting them between Tim, Jeff and, unfortunately, Rashawn. It’ll be different, sometimes very different, but not off the charts. If they do bring in a new musician, that’s great, almost definitely an improvement (keys would be a great way to fill that space IMO), but they have enough musicians up there already to make it work.

Losing LeRoi was hard. This feels different, but still the same — if that makes sense. |

Jesus, I forgot Pig, STJL and #41 somehow. Bayou, whatever. But those other ones, it'll be so obviously different. Hell, even FTWII!

My guess is, it was the other way around.

You take away the violin and you take away what makes DMB unique. That said, the violin hasn’t been central to the band since 2009.

First of all wow. My first thought was this was related to crystal garden unfortunately. Shows will be different for sure but hopefully refreshing and they can try more things.
Didn’t the butch/tim announcement come similarly timed right before the tour? Tomorrow’s show will be interesting |

Exactly. I’m dying to know the details of all this. It’s just so....random....right now. Need official word from DMB management. |

I was just going to say this. If this truly was decided right now (which Im not convinced of and it’s timed as a pr announcement for ticket sales) then I think the band sat him down and said look we are uncomfortable with the news out there and how you have been playing. They probably told him they loved him like a brother and all that but told him it wasn’t in the best interest to continue this year.

I can't help but believe that this is related to the Crystal Garden thing. Where there's smoke there's fire. Kinda interesting that the timing of the announcement comes around the time of a new album and tour etc. Not buying it for a second.

I’m not shocked that Boyd’s out. I’m legitimately shocked that we haven’t heard a peep from anyone about it in any capacity, official or not, aside from his twitter. |
