i just feel like, as far as set flow goes, they'd never match that energy that rest of the night. it would be like a tarantino movie opening with a huge gun fight followed by 2 hours of dialogue.

dude, I hear what you are saying, but I don't go to a show to have my energy level maxed out for the entire show. I go to listen to the music, whether that be IN YOUR FACE or mellow yellow. I want to hear all the emotions of a song.

i don't disagree with this. you completely missed what i was getting at. a set should have peaks spread out, not opening at the top of a cliff and then dropping from there.

I think the same can be said for PNP>Rapunzel. Watchtower at least starts slow and builds.

Most people seem to love openers like Ants Marching or Tripping Billies (when they used to open with them). How's Watchtower any different? Open with a big song and ease into the rest of the set.

i guess, to me, unless they play Halloween then Watchtower is the loudest and most aggressive song in a set. much more than Rapunzel/Ants/Billies/etc. which are all about the same (intensity wise) to me.

but man, i feel like a huge dork for even arguing about this trivial thing.

It's not really an argument, though....just talking about opinions.

I like Billies opening (Nature intro is a must) but dislike an Ants opener unless it's preceeded by something like ASTB>(Too Much)>

I'd take ODH, over this snoozefest opener.

Ugh. Halloween is so overrated. It is the prototypical ENERGY!1111 song.

Yes, it's true. I like some DMB songs others cannot tolerate.

for me, if it's not a banger an opening song needs to at least be mid tempo or have a build to it and something like ADSR just doesn't.

how do you feel about PJ opening with the quieter song like Long Road or Hard to Imagine or Release? The difference, of course, is that you KNOW they will follow with 8 or 9 slammin rockers in a row without so much as a breath of air in between.

I agree about at least needing a build of some sort, but I'm not opposed to a band taking a chance like DMB did opening with DSR. I say do whatever you want, especially if it's random. Now, making it a consistent opener? No thanks...
