Yea I actually kind of like them. I don't listen to them religiously or anything, but they've got some pretty cool tunes. Their production is certainly top notch, especially for their era. They are definitely major league dad rock though.

Dads know what's up.

Their production is definitely top notch. Their studio albums are so pristine and brilliant. Just listen to The Royal Scam. The opening run is flawless.

My favorite Steely Dan track is probably Your Gold Teeth, though. Latin mixed with some jazz fusion? Oh my. I just wish the ending jam went on for more than a minute.

I love 2 Steely Dan songs: Rikki Don't Lose that Number and Do It Again.

I don't listen to Steeley Dan. I'd rather listen to hip 70's rock, like Bruce Springsteen.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not (I think you are), but I really can't stand Bruce. Sure, he has a couple of good hits, but otherwise he makes me cringe. All of my buddies from Long Island are obsessed with him. They think I'm such a music snob, but I just tell them I only listen to good music...

Okay I don't really feel like talking about Bruce, so I'm about to take this thread in a different direction. One of my favorite albums of all time is Momentum by Joshua Redman, my new avatar. I don't think I've ever brought this up in my few posts on this site but I've praised it over on Ants many times with not even a hint of a reply.

This album is so incredibly technical and tasteful, it blows my mind over and over. There aren't any vocals, but the music makes up for that. It has 2 of the best drummers, currently playing, on it: Jeff Ballard and Brian Blade.
It's a hard listen but it warms up as you listen to it. It starts off with a hot slap in the face, but cools down as Brian Blade takes over on the kit. I don't understand how people create music like this...

These are the first 2 true tracks of the album (There is a short, ambient groove before each on the record):

Jeff Ballard is fucking incredible.

I respect the guy and what he's done, but I really don't care for his music.

Indie rock's most celebrated marriage appears to be over, and the band built on that union might follow. Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore announced in a statement that they are separating after 27 years of marriage. "Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November," the statement reads. "Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."

Sonic Youth has five shows scheduled for next month, in Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. It most recent album, the group's 16th, is 2009's The Eternal. Gordon and Moore have a 17-year-old daughter, Coco, who is a member of the band Big Nils. [Via Spin]

oh what the fuck

Right about now, you're probably gathered with loved ones in front of an open fire, sipping on eggnog and gazing at the bright lights on the ol' Christmas tree. It's all part of a holiday tradition that millions of people enjoy 10 days before Halloween. The best part of Christmas in October, of course, is the music, especially when it's sung by the holly jolly singer from Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver. On Tuesday, Scott Weiland will release The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, a collection of yuletide classics that finds the grunge crooner trying out some actual, Perry Como-style crooning. It's a pretty weird record to say the least, particularly "I'll Be Home For Christmas," where Weiland sings about longing for the holidays and the virtues of family in a warm voice that sounds like it's coming from his throat and directly through his nose. You can stream the album here. [via Spin]
