6/17/01 was definitely not great. Could have been worse. I'm glad I went for a few performances such as Angel From Montgomery. At that time I never thought I'd see it performed live so I was extremely excited.

Let me know when you hit 6/24. Or better yet just pay close attention to that LLD.

prelude is in there somewhere right? That's up there with the "throw it on the fire" thing from stl '04 for small ideas I wish they'd taken somewhere.

yeah, prelude was 6/23, it also showed up in various dave teases from 2000-2001. Also, played on 7/10/04.

6.23 is one of my favorite '01 shows. Lots of great moments in that one, especially the ever-popular Grace Prelude.

fun fact: the first DMB show i ever received via B&P was 7.23.01. I got it a few weeks after the show - from a taper, I think, named Nick Gregory or something like that - and I still have the discs.

I had a hard time getting through the Soldier Field 2001 run. It'll take a few days before I could start this up with the Texas Stadium show.

The IEM from the 2nd night at Soldier Field with the Pig teases is one of the funniest recordings I've ever heard in my life.

Listening to Texas Stadium 2001....Roi is insane on #41, sounds alot like Jeff, actually. Oh, and shit, right after that....another Angelique Kidjo Satellite. At any rate, though....this is a 3 hour show. Wow.

I've never understood the hatred for this. She's just singing harmony. It's not like Satellite is one of those pristine "don't you dare ruin this" songs.

She just makes it so much worse. Sounds so out of place. It's like she's shouting. She's not just singing harmony, she sings 2 verses.

It's weird, sure, but it's also Satellite. Never been a song for me to get worked up about either way.

I don't think anyone gets more worked up over those Satellite performances more than anything else they dislike. I know for myself it's easily one of those guest spots that not only didn't help the song but actually hurt the performances, like Weir on Watchtower on 3/14/99 or Kravitz on Watchtower from 5/5/01, or any number of BOWA's or Minarets the Ladies were on or Dicky Betts on Jimi from 8/25/03, etc.. I'm not in-love with Satellite either but I don't certainly hate or dislike it. But either way, even if you dislike it or could care less you could still tell it's a song you didn't enjoy that got even worse with those guest spots.

For me, Satellite is a song that has been played EXACTLY the same way, every single time, since day one. At least they're mixing it up with the Kidjo guest spots. They're the only ones out of 700+ versions that are in any way distinct. Even if it wasn't completely successful, that's worth something to me.

I don't think it's just you. I mean it's an undoubted fact that it's been played the same since day one, MAYBE minus a few '92/93 performances with Dave starting the intro a bit differently. I don't consider it something of worth. Something of note on the other hand, that I would agree with, especially if you're just viewing it statistically. But if you are basing it on the actual performance, then it's just a poor guest spot, regardless if it's one of only few times they've ever mixed it up.

Even songs that are played the same way all the time can have really good versions for various reasons, like the full band acoustic performance on 7/22/95, so a poor guest spot doesn't really mean much to me. I mean it was an honest attempt, just as every other idea for a guest spot the band has had but it just failed, imo.

Okay, I'm back on the wagon. Listening to 7/23/01...the Ice Palace in Tampa right now. Man, July 2001 actually sounds pretty good for being 2001. The band was playing with a purpose. Fonz/Carter/Roi were in the zone.

7/23 is pretty good, except that 20-minute Two Step kind of goes nowhere. 7/25 is awesome, of course.

Yeah, Two Step is just starting. Junior Brown as a guest....I'm guessing on electric guitar? I can't wait to hear how Butch murders this one. Although, Butch is sounding very tight here providing some nice fills in the shorter songs.
