Sister was dedicated to an Italian fan whose favorite song was Sister... Some guy was chanting for Mercy the night before so that was probably the inspiration for that. Someone behind me was yelling for Angel last night. Ugh.

I will say Angel is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It's mediocre sure, but for ages it was deemed worst song often.

Angel really does not hold up. At least some of those Everyday songs had decent lyrics, but I'd put Angel up against Be Yourself in terms of awfulness

Agreed. The fact that he wasted that great riff on those lyrics still kills me.

This is mostly due to the fact that they played it for 15+ minutes many times in '01 with the LL. I think had they kept the song truncated to how it is on the album, I don't think it be hated nearly as much as it is. I wouldn't mind it at a show at all these days if it's a tight 4-5 minute verison with Tim and/or Jeff ripping on it. The lyrics are awful, but so are the lyrics to over 50% of everything they've put out in the last 10 years. I'd take Angel over Black and Bluebird, If Only, Death on High Seas and a bunch of other snoozefest songs.

So here is my little review:

We stayed for some days in Milano. Weather was really good and so the whole atmosphere was really relaxing. The venue is fantastic. Kinda reminded me a bit of RADIO CITY HALL.
First of all let me say.. You can't get the vibe of a show if you not there. The interaction between D & T and the crowd was great. Lot of little highlights.

We took our seats in the lower balcony. Good view.
The boys entered the stage and began with SEEK UP. Bam!
Where Are You Going ... ouch ... but solid version.
Grey Street is way too fast for me. I prefer it more slow. Though I was hoping for Grey Street. Expected more.
Minarets was fantastic. Great version. Definitely a highlight.
Both Tim songs were great. Really dig Manfood. People enjoyed it.

There were a lot of chants and singing ... people just started to sing "honey honey ... come and dance with me"
Some chants like "BABY BLUE!" ... "If Only" ....

Before Virgina In The Rain he told that his songwriting became more "boring" ... and writing more for his kids etc. Kinda interesting.
Someone chanted for THE MAKER. So they decided to play it. What a treat. Really good version.

Corn Bread is just heater. Crowd really loved it. As I did.
Followed by Mercy. Really hoped to see Dave on the piano. Love that outro. But Dave decided to keep it on the guitar and was singing a bit. You can really say this outro is pure magic. Tim was amazing. Take a listen.

You & Me... damn i hate that song. Really took out the energy.
I didn't expect SISTER. Dave said to Tim: "I hope I don't mess it up". It was dedicated to a fanclub member I think. (Christina from Italy?)
Samurai Cop. Tim added some new sound to the outro. I dig this song.

The last few songs were great. I thought the whole show could be like this. Energy was off the roof. People got out of their seats and started dancing... singing. It was great.

To put all in a nutshell...

- Dave voice is great currently
- Seek Up, Samurai Cop, The Maker, Rapunzel,.. lot of diversity. Can't complain
- I thought Tim played very decent. Maybe the volume level was kinda low
- Lot of drunk guys from the States. There is a great discussion on FB about a picture someone took how a guy slept the whole show in the frontrow
- Still think Dave is a horrible setlist writer

Dave didn't play piano on the Mercy outro? Did I understand that right?

Correct. I was surprised. It was pretty funny when the crowd all started singing everyday, then he motioned like he was going to play it, and then went for You and Me instead. Not sure which one I'd rather hear.

Thanks for the review, well done. But the part I quoted is kind of sad, it's like he's content about how his songwriting is boring and that it's kind of "that's how it is". From that quote doesn't sound like he cares to try and make it more interesting.

But it makes a lot of sense, and It explains a lot. Basically Dave is at a point in his life where he just doesn't have a lot to say or a lot to write about these days--it's either going to be blatantly political or stuff his kids like. Which I get, but the music suffers because of that. I hope when his kids do grow up and move on that he's still making music, because that might be the next time we really see another stage/level of his songwriting come into play. I think a lot of songwriters struggle at this age/point in their careers. Seriously think about any songwriter who hit 50 with kids and didn't put out subpar stuff. Can you name one? I can't. Most either take a break during that time or put out garbage.

It's a shame that the chorus of Rooftop as well as the music/breakdown ruins the song for me because I think lyrically it's one of Dave's most interesting songs of recent years and very different than his other recent output.

Agreed. I don't hate the chorus, but it definitely keeps it from becoming a truly great song. Rooftop is one of those songs I like hearing live, but can totally do without too. And I hate that live breakdown thing. It's like when they used to do that really stupid slow-down part in Too Much in 2006/2007. It just torpedoes the momentum of the song. The best version I've seen live is still the first one I saw in 2012, before they added that part.

To be clear, the Too Much breakdown was awesome. Rooftop breakdown not so much.

The Too Much breakdown was fun at first but by the end of 2007, they slowed it to such a crawl that you could take a piss break during it. When Tim came the next year and the song reverted back to its original version I was stoked.
