Not that this isn't a famous show already (Recently EP source show), but this could be one of my favorite shows of all time. By far the best WWYS I've ever heard, a funky #36, and a staple Minarets -> Typical. If you haven't heard this show it's a must.

Gave this a go after the conversation yesterday about it, it had been awhile. Lots of 2000s sound like a 45 set to 33 1/3 (you younger folk ask your parents what that means). None of it here. They're on fire from beginning to end. Probably because they had to be on their toes dodging crickets. #41 is great with a drum duet in the middle. My only complaint is that it finishes a little weak with Busted and True without building into the Rapunzel closer, with a 1 song Billies. Anyway, **** 1/2, and I don't just give those out willy-nilly.

Very solid show, a rare appearence of Watermellon song, the first Toy Soldiers, Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago and Dave's talk about his best friend Jack Daniels right before Cry Freedom. The nice long Recently hits the spot, love the outro they do after the main part of the song. This is one of those first few shows I got when I traded and I seem to go back to it every once in a while. Granted its a standard for the year, just looks great to me, I'd walk out of that show and be happy.

A trainwreck lyrically for Dave, he messes up Rapunzel, little of Crush, and a few others. A nice rare Bridge->Too Much where Dave jumps the gun way early for Too Much, you can hear the rest of the band playing the Bridge and he plays the intro to Too Much. Also like Song that Jane Likes in the encore. Crush has Leroi playing the flute for his solo (alternating with Boyd sorta like what Leroi and Rashawn have done) and the outro which sounds great. You can sorta hear the hesitation in the Crush outro (just sounds like its going to end many times before Carter rips it up) and the glimpse of the great ending that will develop. Crash has some random noodling by Stefan throughout the intro and the first verse, while different, adds a little to the song IMO. I still don't know if I really like Boyd plucking the Watchtower solo, I liked it in LIC but it's just nice to have something different. Greg is a great guest, I can really hear him in DDTW sorta sound like Bela when he's on the song. I really enjoy hearing Dave at the end of the song repeat the outro "And I live with my justice..."

One of the songs that changes more than we thing at least during the solos, is Jimi Thing. The groove has changed a few times, Dave took a solo then stopped, turned to scatting, letting Butch scat, there's so much to this song but the song needs a little change again to freshen it up. Over the past few years the groove has been the same, and a little change would be cool.

Eric, if you're gonna rate a show, at least give us something more than a sentence or two.

i was going to do one for 5.20.98 for you, but i figured that was beaten to death, besides the fact bokon and i have been arguing about its status for going on seven years now.

It's been great. Now that I can listen to lossless shows at work I can go through all the shows I haven't listened to.

July 6, 2002 - MARS Music Amphitheatre - West Palm Beach, Florida

Tight Rapunzel opener followed by a kick to the nuts with If I Had It All. I listened to this without looking at the set, or the previous night's. So Right was pretty good, Grey Street was great. Loving Wings was new and boring. Highlight of the show was probably Jimi, 2002 being it's best year, IMO. They absolutely EXPLODE into the last chorus and the musical theme they toyed with often that year followed into a great solo by Dave. Probably after 5/23, it's my favorite version of the year. I always love Fool to Think and You Never Know. I remembered seemingly ever single encore that tour being Gravedigger - What You Are, so Ants was a great surprise. Still though, the show wasn't great, few standout song versions. ** 3/4

Shoreline Amphitheatre - 9.8.06

Spoiler:
Everyday
Big Eyed Fish -->
Bartender
If I Had it All
Loving Wings
Crash Into Me
Hunger for the Great Light
The Idea of You
Grey Street
Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd
Can't Stop
The Last Stop
Dancing Nancies
What Would You Say
Jam* -->
Louisiana Bayou*
------------------
So Right
Stay

This is a pretty damn difficult show for me to grade. The Everyday opener is pretty neutral for me (it doesn't bug me nearly as much as most around here), but I really wasn't a fan of Fishtender in the 2/3 slot. Especially after a mellow opener, IMO Fish is way too dreary at that point. Carter and Butch have some nice work in Bartender, and Dave really gets into this version, but the Leroi/Rashawn is just WAY too drawn out. Things really don't get much better the next few songs, as the If I Had it All/Loving Wings/Crash run keeps things really, really mellow (despite Leroi and Rashawn's best attempts at spicing up the first two of that run). Of course, I probably shouldn't have begged about energy with Hunger coming up at that point. A very nice Idea of You and Grey Street seem to get things moving, finally, but Stolen Away and Can't Stop back to back is just brutal (after the Dave solo version, I had almost forgotten how bad the guitarless, slow Can't Stop was). This show up to this point just can't get any sort of momentum. The Last Stop is absolutely perfect right here, and this is a real nice and tight '06 version (props in particular to the horns again and to Carter). I love where they took this song last year, and it really breathed some life into this set. Nancies and WWYS were a nice follow up before the "improv" intro and Bayou with RR to close. I really dig the "improv" in particular; hopefully whatever song this is shows up this year, and Bayou with RR and Rashawn are just a great fit. So Right is pretty badass with great work by Rashawn and Carter in particular, before Stay closes things out.

So all in all, some real good playing by the band and a nice end run salvages a pretty awful setlist. Again, tough for me to grade this one. I'll give it 2.5 stars (their playing rates 3-3.5 stars, making up for at best a 2 star setlist).

tell Bill to make sure he doesn't have plans Saturday night, and I'll bring it over. Or you can just go in your basement and take his copy.
