TDC Marriage & Family Thread

[the first 31 posts here were moved from the "Stuff" thread from yesterday]

Figured I'd mention this in here, since I don't see a family/engagement/wedding thread, haha....buuuuut, got engaged on black Friday: Did it at the Stephen Kellogg show at the World Cafe in Philly. He does a pre show acoustic set of two songs for fan club members....we've talked about using his song [Only registered users can see links.] as a wedding song eventually, so I contacted his management and got him and his band to play the song and set it up for me. Really great moment, intimate too. Only 25 people there before the actual show. She was a mess, haha, in a good way. Had no idea. Luckily for me, there was a pro photographer there just to see the pre-show and she snapped a few shots and sent them to me, as well.

Any wedding planning advice would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats, Jason! That's awesome man.

As far as advice, nah, just stay out of her way and let her plan it.

Congratulations!

I just celebrated my first anniversary in November.

Best advice I can give on wedding planning is to remember that you're just the accessory there for the evening.

Also, I don't know what the dynamic is between your future wife and your future Mother-In-Law, but it's been my experience that most weddings end up being the Mother-In-Law giving her daughter the wedding she never had. Be prepared for friction there and stay the hell out of the way, because you will NEVER win (no matter which side you pick) in that kind of a fight.

Best words to know when wedding planning: "Would that make you happy?"

I've thought it before we could use a marriage/family thread, when people want to show off their nnew baby, etc. I just didn't know if I wanted to be that guy to start it

I think we'd all fall in line pretty quickly if the red-lettered, self-proclaimed family man kicked it off.

I mean you could just roll all these posts into one so that you know 5 other guys have already contributed to it...

When I started talking with you folks I was around 13-14. That I'm here and gearing up for this point in my life, I'm feeling pretty weird about time.

Oh, it's by no means just this.

Myself and 3 friends have all closed on houses in the last 12 months (amusingly, all within a 6-7 block radius of one another). Among my friends, there have also been 4 weddings, 2 engagements, and another 2 in the process of purchasing rings.

I've been kind of amazed at how abruptly life shifts for just about everyone at ~30.

We close on our second house in 2 weeks. As stressful and expensive as it can be, I will never rent again.

See, in saying something that makes you feel old, you're making me feel really old (I bought my house in '97)

It's interesting that this thread popped up today, my kid threw up all over the place while getting ready for school this morning.

As for wedding advice, hire people to take care of stuff for you if you can (or use family members). My wife wanted to do it all herself, so she did. During the actual wedding and the reception, she was so stressed out that she absolutely hated the whole thing . . . which sucks considering how much it cost. To this day she hates talking about our wedding and tells everyone to elope or do a small wedding on the beach.

Congrats on your engagement! I'm not a big wedding fan, so my husband and I went to the mountains and got married, just the two of us, the judge, and some witness from the waiting room. It was absolutely perfect - no stress whatsoever! We did a big dinner for our families later because everyone was so mad at us.

I actually enjoyed my wedding / reception tremendously.

Took a shot right before the first dance, and ended the night with all my wife's friends and my friends at a bar around the corner from the reception venue drinking until last call.
