Iris is a great example of the Goo Goo Dolls' "really meaningful sounding lyrics that are essentially nonsense" approach to songwriting. (See also: Slide, Dizzy). For some reason, this makes for great radio singles. Just ask Coldplay.

So true, but the music in Iris is so fucking good.

I mean, I'd splooge myself if DMB would make something that good in the future. Squirm comes close at least. The mix of instruments, the orchestration, the groove of the song, mmmm.
