Live Trax 54 - 11/9/96 | Cow Palace, Daly City, CA (12/11/20)

Ordered mine last Friday and got it on Tuesday. Mix isn’t that great. I have a really solid 15 speaker Bose system in my car and it sounds sub par. Old school set, but nothing outside of #41 and Typical stand out.

Bummer, yeah, I've mentioned my dislike of '96 on here many times. I think this is one of those shows was a classic popularly traded tape back in the day, so it brings a lot of nostalgia back to people, and it's definitely one of the better '96 shows, but that doesn't say much. To me that whole year just sounds super flat.

Finally got this in the mail. It was nice to hear just the five of them, specifically on #41 and Jimi where they sort of meander for a bit before finding a groove and ending strong. Nancies jam is fire, and I’ve always enjoyed this little transition era of Two Step. Graves is the only lackluster performance IMO, itself in an awkward transition phase. On net, happy to have this release.

This 41 is legit too.

1996 isn’t as good as 1995 or 1997, but it’s still a god year. 10/31/96 is a show that sticks out to me. That should totally be a live trax one day. The show kick all sorts of ass.

Both live trax 7 and 18 are smoking shows.

‘96 sounds tired to me, like the band is just exhausted and rightfully so. They’ve been touring nonstop from 93-96, recorded two albums and literally had no time to breathe. There’s always good shows in every year, but I never purposely put on a 96 show by choice. It’s my least favorite pre-00 year by far.

‘97 was really the first year since they started where they took a good 4-5 month month break before going out on the summer tour. They were going winter, spring, summer, winter, D+T straight through that 93-96 period. It’s a reason why ‘97 seems more loose imo.

I agree that this mostly just sounds like a 96 show to me. After hearing that 96 LT from classic amphitheater, they all just sound like that performance to me. What GKK says makes sense about them just going and going. The break in 97 was probably why 98 sounds so good.

As for getting 10/31/96 released, I guess, but I feel like it will sound like any other 96 show at the end of the day maybe with a bit of energy behind it. There’s a ton of other shows I’d want before they go back to a 96 again.

Yup agreed, and its clearly just a theory, but if you look at their touring schedule..after the '97 D+T tour, they were off from February to basically June. That was the first real "break" they had since they formed the band in 1991 ..Crazy stretch, and the first few years of that was them sleeping all together in a tiny van. So Summer '97 felt like a "refresh/reset" to me, the band now had lots of money, were living and traveling better, and were rested, it was definitely the "next level".

I just love that set on 10/31/96. I remember the performances being solid too. It’s been a while since I listened to the tape though.
