My gf works in healthcare in Colorado and she got her first round this week. Her second is in February.

I don’t think I’ll qualify as a teacher here (part time, university students) so I suspect I’ll be waiting a while. I want it as soon as I can have it.

My brother in law got his second shot yesterday, and my wife gets her second on Monday. Pretty exciting. I think we just crossed 5% of our state population with their first shot. I guess they’ve been doing it by the tiers, but then at the end of the day if there is no line and there are still shots left in the vials, they send out a message saying get here in the next :30 and anyone in the hospital can have one. That way nothing goes to waste.

I'm honestly not very familiar. Was there something particular that he did or has done? I might need to do a bit of research.

It’s happening at pharmacies and hospitals. They thawed too many vials or ppl didn’t show up for their appointment. So instead of throwing away doses, they’ll ask random ppl in the store/hospital if they want the vaccine.

I really didn’t want to go there but: fuck these people. Nurses make $100k/year with full benefits. I don’t feel sorry for them at all that they might catch a flu that’s not going to do anything to them. Such a stupid opportunity that they’re fully exploiting to jerk themselves off.

In Ontario we hit 4,200 cases today. First time passing 4k.

Thanks to all the selfish assholes who gathered during Christmas - which obviously they were gonna do, despite the lockdown. Sadly, I more than understand the compulsion, but if I'm gonna do my part, stay home, and spiral into depression, watching everyone else go see family and friends and break the rules pisses me off.

in quebec, we're going into a stricter lockdown phase with 8pm-5am curfews in effect until at least feb 8th. but schools are remaining open. not too sure what the calculus is there, but okay.

But also, whoops!!!

Turns out our sacrifices to the altar of greed aren't working anyway, just as all the smart people (Non-Josh Division) predicted:
[Only registered users can see links.] , cutting 140,00 positions, clear evidence that the economy is faltering as the viral pandemic tightens its grip on consumers and businesses.

At the same time, the unemployment rate stayed at 6.7%, the first time it hasn’t fallen since April.

Do you know how the schools are functioning? Is it full time, or a hybrid model?

Yeah that's bizarre. Our schools are staying online another two weeks at least.
I also don't understand what a curfew accomplishes, other than creating higher concentrated areas during the day.

i think high schools are every other day? it might be just the older kids that are every other day. not sure what they do on their off days, if they're learning online or just have a self-study day. but elementary schools are full time.

(full disclosure, i only have one kid and he's homeschooling his 4th grade this year.. so i havent been paying the closest attention to this stuff)

4,000 people aren’t dying *of* COVID-19 every day and if you think so despite all of the reports repeatedly showing that deaths WITH COVID far outweigh deaths FROM COVID, you’re an idiot. States are merging non-COVID deaths with anyone that tested positive within 1-2 months of COVID-19 (depending on the state), no matter the actual cause of death.

4,000 people a day yet barely any of us personally know of anyone that’ve died exclusively from COVID-19 almost a year into the pandemic.

You love your media panic porn, that’s for sure. Such a lunatic.

I think curfews are less than half measures.

But I will explain the theory as I understand it: there is less and less reason to be outside your home after 8pm. No one is going to have dinner at 11:30pm, you're going to drink and socialize.

It's an attempt to let families eat out but not let people party out.

The problem is that both those things are really bad and shouldn't be permitted.

Ever since a few hundred far right nut bags stormed the Capitol the other day there’s this sense from Mario that he has credibility again. He’s basking in some glow that he hasn’t earned nor cannot stake claim to and pretending once again he’s credible in any way whatsoever. Despite 99% of what he spews proving over and over again to be bullshit.

That theory doesn't hold up here, since restaurants have been closed for dining for weeks (or months in Toronto's case). We've been in lockdown for weeks, meaning only essential services are open (aside from curbside pickup and delivery). Nobody is even going out unless it's for exercise, doctor appointments, or things like groceries. People are also going to parks, but not after dark (which is before 5pm anyway). So all a curfew would do is keep people from running important errands like groceries in the evening.

I understand what you are saying, but I think the point remains.

No one needs to be getting takeout food at 11pm. I think the idea, which I don't agree with, is making sure there aren't enticements that end up with people socializing at night. Just don't be out at all.

[Only registered users can see links.] :
More than half of coronavirus cases are transmitted from people without symptoms of the virus, according to a new model from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“In this base case, 59% of all transmission came from asymptomatic transmission, comprising 35% from presymptomatic individuals and 24% from individuals who never develop symptoms,” the model [Only registered users can see links.] .

Presymptomatic individuals are those who did get symptoms of the virus, but were asymptomatic and infectious before developing their symptoms.

The authors concluded “that the identification and isolation of persons with symptomatic COVID-19 alone will not control the ongoing spread of SARS-CoV-2.”
There are no "safe" precautions except go home and stay home.

Yeah. Although, to your initial comment - essential workers on night shifts still need to eat.

I don't disagree, of course. It's a real logistical problem.

The only thing I can say is, what do you do if you work as staff at concert venue, and you finish work at like 12:30am. There aren't really any restaurants open.

It sucks. But there were always bar staff who get off work at 2am and there's nowhere to eat when their shift ended, you know?
