COVID-19/Coronavirus: Away From The World
Thought I'd get a separate thread going for this, considering how things have unfolded over the last 48 hours.
I am a high school teacher in Maine and we just had our first confirmed case in the county where I teach, possibly the same town. And another presumptive case two hours north. There are bound to be more. It was a very uneasy feeling at school today, and I think most teachers, parents, and students are wondering why schools haven't closed for at least two weeks. There is no toilet paper anywhere, the grocery stores are insane. We are all affected by this. What are everyone's thoughts? Are leagues and the NCAA overreacting? Are universities and public school systems overreacting? Is this the appropriate action given the facts? The last two days have been so surreal. I can confidently say that if a more major/deadly contagion outbreak were to occur in the future, humanity is royally fucked.

If nothing happens and it doesn't get much worse than it is now
The people that are saying this is all overblown and we are overreacting will say they are right. The people that want to close everything will say they prevented the virus from spreading. Fun times ahead!

IMO, we all need to be patient. The next few months will be tough. I'm hopeful (gotta have hope!) that things will cool down by July or so. If we are locked down like Italy, the only things open will be food stores and a few other things. I live in a big city, so i can get around easily. Be patient, be positive, be hopeful.

I work at an assisted-living facility and we are not allowing the family members to come in. It is a way to keep the residents safe.

Most large events in AZ canceled this week, making me nervous for the next few weeks. Lost out on more than $3k over this thing in the last 2 weeks. 2 confirmed cases in Phoenix I hear, nothing up the hill that we know of. I’m selfishly far more worried about work right now than actually getting sick.

I don't get the obsession with toilet paper. Are people literally shitting themselves over this? Are they confused and think it's a diarrhea disease? Do they think that all stores are gonna be shuttered?

I was at the grocery store an hour ago for a few things we needed, it was pure chaos. Everyone was nice enough and no fights or anything like that, but just packed to the gills, grabbing all the canned goods and pasta...... I'm limiting my trips for when I need essential purchases. I stopped at the store, wiped the cart handle with a clorox wipe, got what I needed, used self-checkout and used a single-serve packet of hand sanitizer before getting into the car. Washed my hands to the tune of happy birthday x2 when I got home too. All you can do, I guess. |

I did all my grocery shopping last night. I’m picking it all up, or it’s being delivered, tomorrow. I’m not even going to try to fight that battle this weekend.

Anything else I needed I covered with my quick grocery run this morning. It's gonna be an interesting few months when this continues. I'd imagine Prime Pantry, once things settle down with the rush to buy canned goods, TP, Clorox Wipes, etc, will have better stock. |

I went to the grocery last night just to get my normal stuff. Bottled water, toilet paper, paper towels, and canned goods were picked clean.
Potatoes were damn near gone. The rest of the produce was plentiful

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain the difference to me. I mean, I'm not one of those claiming nonsense like this is a hoax or even that we're overreacting (although perhaps a bit). I"m just curious why life went on pretty normally back then, but this response is so different.

One of the major differences there (I just read something about it earlier today) is that that particular strain actually originated here, so we were dealing with it before anyone else really was. We had to figure it out on our own. In this case we’ve been able to see what it’s done elsewhere and adopt some of the practices that have slowed it down there. Also, even though H1N1 was a new strain, it was a flu virus. Humans have evolved fighting that virus. No one’s body has ever dealt with this one.

It's crazy going to the super markets and seeing all the fresh produce being overlooked for frozen stuff. I get the thought behind it, but it is certainly a weird visual.
