In the 90's and early 2000's Carter did more because there was more space in the music and it allowed for it. I think we would all agree we became fans from this version of DMB sound and not really what they are putting out today. Carter's drumming was a large part of that sound for me.

In the past 10 years you have Tim taking a more prominent role in the sound of songs and you have the horn section which is also a large voice. So Carter may be approaching this from the idea that he doesn't need to fill in space because other people will.

Based off of the Warehouse Sessions I think a Dave, Carter, Stefan Trio type tour would probably allow carter to do more of those small things we all loved about him again because there would be space to fill. I'm not saying it would be tour stop #1, but over time I think he will recognize the situation.
I think it's a little bit of both. He doesn't have the endurance he used to have. That's obvious now at the end of crush. There's been a few shows the last few years where he is leaning over his snare at the end of a song. I think I read that he took the two step solo out because his Dr told him he needed to restrict some? Not sure if that's true, but this was at the start of him going vegan and losing a lot of weight.

And then I think he's letting the band fill out some like you mentioned. It's weird, but a good drumming buddy of mine and I noticed how much he held back especially in 18 when Buddy was first added. It's like he plays so basic, but I guess it was to not get Buddy lost maybe?

Carters stuff can get crazy and if you don't know where he's going, I could see how a newer player could get lost. Just really interesting for sure.

Apparently he saw my replica kit again this year since he has his new setup and said he absolutely loved it. Still no official word from him though

I love this LIOG from 8/14/07 so much - I hope DMB releases a soundboard of it one day. The whole show has some really solid performances, but I consistently go back to this LIOG

Isn’t it the show where there was a single taper, but they have refused to release it for some reason? Maybe because of some ungrateful boarders or something?

I assume the "back story" referenced here is the fact that this was Trey's first public performance after his drug arrest and was a really big deal for him personally/professionally.

The Shotgun from this show is also top tier, if not the best one.

Didn't Dave's wife ban him from seeing Trey for a while?
