I think my favorite PM of all-time is still 06/07/96 (WH8V1). As much as I dislike '96, Proudest Monkey might have been at it's all-time peak that year. Roi's solo on the this is just incredible.

Ive always loved that version definitely used to be my go-to back when i had it on my ipod. I think youre definitely right. We agree about that 96 sound but that is one song i think they nail that year. It makes perfect sense to me why too. Thats an extremely loose and jammy song. There really isnt a set way to play it. The studio version is mostly a roi solo anyways so it captures all their great playing from that year in a super loose and free flowing format.

What's with everyone dumping on 96? I love 96 DMB for the most part.

Two Step - 5/21/02
An under the radar gem. Butch's entrance into the jam is jazzy as hell and sounds like something you'd see at a jazz club around 2am. Just an excellent all around outro.

I just don't get it. I'm super critical but I love most of what I've heard from '96 DMB.

For me, it's not that it's "bad", it's just very stale and flat sounding, especially when you compare it to pretty much any other 90s year. . Aside from PM, none of the songs really evolved or changed thoroughout the year, everything was played exactly the same every time, and it just lacks energy overall. Not every show obviously, but a good chunk of them. If you've heard LT4, you've pretty much heard all of that year, give or take.

That show has a special last tour of the show feel. Love that Typical and #36. Solid tape too.

What a crazy weekend. Some of my worst experiences in the lots at DMB shows have taken place in Hartford. This was certainly no exception. It wasn't that a bunch of people tried to get into the shows without tickets and then started a riot, those assholes didn't even attempt to go to the show. They just went to the lots to party. Rowdy, immature, rude, idiotic and dangerous kids showed up in droves to just drink and vandalize.
What you won't find in a lot of the articles written up about this is how it kind of all started. The lots were basically full many hours before the show even started, backing up traffic for miles and miles of fans who actually had tickets to the show, causing a major issue with the local and state police and officials for the Meadows instructed on-site security to start asking people to verify they had tickets to the show. So when security started patrolling the Jai Lai lot, there was A LOT of drunken confrontation between intoxicated non-ticket holders and security. Police rushed in and were immediately met with violence. Some fans were arrested for simply just being intoxicated because they were near the group of morons which sparked even more confrontation. This was 90% the fault of those assholes but 10% of the blame was on how it was all handled from the very beginning by on-site security. And by the way, this was N1. N2 and N3 are the nights everyone remembers and talk about because the police and Meadows security combed through the lots (because of what they encountered on N1) and arrested a good number of people before the riots even took place for underage drinking, disorderly conduct, drugs, destruction of private and public property, the list goes on. This was all happening in the AFTERNOON of the second show. And because the Meadows, State and Local Police were trying to crack down, it ignited a massively combative crowd of non-ticket holding drunken assholes who just started throwing bottles. I remember seeing a hailstorm of fucking budlight bottles being thrown and they were hitting even just normal fans hanging in the lot. It was awful. That's when the police became more aggressive when they saw innocent civilians getting injured by bottles, rocks, etc... and the police moved in closer to the epicenter of all the destruction and violence were tackling these jerks, zip-tying their hands, and then that created even more chaos and we saw fires being started and then the unruly crowd started moving from where they had been hanging the entire time and smashing car windows and assaulting unsuspecting fans trying to walk to the venue. Hartford '99 were great shows but hands down the worst experience interacting with others pre/post-show and getting in and out of those shows. I've also never left a venue where it looked like a literal landfill. No joke. There's a reason why Hartford doesn't even open their fucking lot until like what 4pm now? Many venues have followed suit, at least around here like Mansfield. Some venues I just don't park or hang in the lots anymore, stopped doing so in Hartford in 2000. I'll pay the extra $20 to park in the private parking lot of a business.
