In-Depth Song Discussion #11--Write A Song

Back on track here. I often forget about this song because it's highly forgettable. Not the band's worst by any means, but certainly not a top notch either imo. Lyrics are average at best and the whole song is a bit cheesy. I do like the breeziness of the chorus though and did enjoy it the few times I've heard it live.

This is one song they got it right with leaving it off the album though I think, it's definitely more of a B-side in terms of quality. I like it much more than certain songs on BW, but I don't think this song would have fit as well. For example, it's much better than Timebomb, but TB fits in the albums flow much better than this would, so it's hard to argue.

best versions? It's one of those songs that is pretty much the same every time, so I guess there won't be a "definitive".

This is definitely a forgettable song for me. I don't really enjoy it and feel it's way too 'cheesy.' There's a reason it's a B-side.

I’ve always liked this song. It is definitely kind of forgettable, but not in a bad way. It’s a good harmless fun song, just not a highlight.

pretty much how I feel. There are some live versions where I think Jeff was adding more to it and that always helps.

Its kind of forgettable but I did really enjoy it when it popped up during the Caravan.

I think of the "left off the album" songs I prefer Trouble with You and kinda wish they would have played it at least once for twice since the groove is so nice.

Now that I think about it Trouble With You sounds a lot more like a CT song than a SU one.

Playing that game, with the tracks available and knowing they tried Sugar Will during these sessions, I'd have liked Big Whiskey to look like this:

Shake Me Like a Monkey
Funny the Way It Is
Spaceman
Corn Bread
Squirm
Why I Am
#27
Alligator Pie
Beach Ball
Seven
Lying in the Hands of God
Sugar Will

WAS is a pretty solid little tune.

A while ago I took the April Demo of BW and tacked on Cornbread and the LRB songs at the end and it was a nice listen. WAS definitely made a better closer to that playlist than You and Me would've.

I like Write a Song. Not as much as Beach Ball, certainly, but I do enjoy it.

It's a throwaway, but no less so than about half the material on the last 4 albums.

It is kind of funny that there's not much to be had in terms of in depth analysis on this one...

As far as I’ve heard all the live performances are the same. Is there one that stands out?

I'd go with the one off the Warehouse disc - 9/4/10 I think. Gorge 2010. Good jam. And the Davespeak about that crazy Kayla girl who went to almost every show in 2010. I think she ripped off a lot of people in the LoVE foundation or something like that. Anyway, that's a good version of Write a Song.

There is a lot to like about this tune, especially the studio version with Roi. It's swinging and parts of it sound like it's from a different era. Ultimately it falls a bit short for me because the lyrics and message "tell" instead of "showing."
