I'm not sure I get that vibe from the trailers alone.

isn't he supposed to be a poor kid or at least not give a fuck about normal every day stuff like haircuts and clean clothes? plus the use of arcade fire in the trailer is perfect and sets a wonderful surreal tone. i don't care how "hipster" they've become, good music is good music. and the kid looks like he does an awesome job in the movie.

i never said anything about those things. as far as max, no, his backstory is limited. in the book he just gets rowdy at home and gets sent to his room. any backstory/look was created by spike jonze. and to me it looks like a bit of pandering to their demographic, which would include the current generation of hipsters.

well that's pretty much the only demographic that cares about this. my 45 year old mother who i thought would be into this has no idea what it is. it's definitely for our generation.

right, and that's exactly what i'm saying. max could have any backstory/look. jonze gave him that one for a reason. what i'm saying is, i'd have appreciated a bit of a broader view of max, one that doesn't try to force-feed me from the get go how turbulent his emotions are.

i didn't get that feeling at all. it seems you're going into this in a cynical way.

not in the least. i had an invitation to a test screening nearly 18 mos ago but didn't go and have been kicking myself ever since. i was worried to hear that after that screening, wb wanted jonze to reshoot significant portions of the movie to appeal more to kids. i've been looking forward to this movie since it was announced. again, the only thing that looks unappealing to me about it thus far is the heavy-handed approach to the marketing. i just hope the final film is more subtle than that.

ok then. i guess i can overlook the indie aspect of their pick for how well it works in the trailer. let's also not forget this is spike jonze we're talking about, i wouldn't call him a hipster but he's definitely an alternative dude and picking an offbeat choice for music is just who he is.

its not hard to have a record breaking profit margin when you charge 6 dollars a movie ticket (or whatever it was in 1999) and only spend 3k on the film. Give me a break, I hate it when things get credit for being "revolutionary" when really they just sucked, but it happened to suck while trying something new. Blair Witch Project 2 however, is in one of the more reputable top 50 best horror movies of all time, and is apparently done completely different than the first and is actually scary.

I agree with 1999 being a great year for film.

American Beauty...one of the greatest horror movies of all time - the Sixth Sense...Matrix... By the way, South Park is indeed considered a quality musical comedy; Blame Canada was nominated for an Oscar.
