No doubt... 2/18/71 is an all-time great. I love 71 in general, for the most part. April 71 is one of my favorite Dead months- Dillon Gym in Princeton (4/17?)-- my favorite Pigpen show-- and of course the amazing Fillmore East run. And then a bunch of great shows in the summer and fall. I have a 12/71 Felt Forum tape I've always liked listening to.

That's cool that the Capitol has re-opened as a concert venue. Would have been great to see them at any of those great small venues back then, for sure.

71 is a great year. I would have to say I like '70 a bit more but it's all gravy. That Princeton show is Phil's favorite Pigpen as well

The Cap is gorgeous. If you get a chance to see a show there, do not pass it up

Damn. Dave's Picks 4 mix is quite narrow. Feels totally buried to me. Not a complaint, just a disappointment. These tapes are old, happy to have them at all.

Yup. Just listening to it now, you're spot on with that description. The 6.9.76 Road Trips release sounds so much better (but even the straight boards from that month are fantastic). Oh well.

Looking forward to the 11.17.73 DP5. Outstanding show in one of the best-ever months.

It seems Dave's Picks 4 is a Healy mix whereas 6/9 Road Trips and 6/18 Download Series were both Betty boards

Bummer

Yeah 11/17/73 is incredible

cool

I haven't seen a Dead-related band since Furthur at Radio City a couple of years ago (the show when Elvis Costello sat in for a bunch of tunes).

Blasphemy - I grew up seeing rock shows at that place in the mid-90s. What I'd pay to take a time machine back to '95 and see just one more show there....

Thanks Mitch for the tip on Stairway. Might actually try to work something out w/ it since there's a tape and a few source.

I'm about halfway through that article; it's dense and very well written.

There's a shot at DMB in the midst of it, while referring to people just like me. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's a shot, there are a lot of big words...

Quote:
The Dead’s reputation and press coverage have always fixated on the culture that sprouted up around the band, and that then began to choke it, like a weed. When the Dead stopped touring, many of the fans moved on to other travelling carnivals—often to the so-called jam bands that had drawn inspiration and a music-industry approach (though not quite a musical vocabulary) from the Dead. This, too, was often taken to be a kind of indictment: the Dead are sometimes damned by the company their fans keep. The conflation of the Dead with, say, the Dave Matthews Band—incongruous as the two may be musically—can really smart.

Phil & Friends just played Wake of the Flood at the Wellmont on 11/7/12

Otherwise, I don't pay a ton of attention to Furthur's sets.

Dave's Picks 6 and the 2013 bonus disc announced. I'm particularly excited to hear 2/2/70.

Quote:
We're really bad at keeping secrets around here so just imagine how hard it's been for us to contain our excitement about the 2 now-complete shows, once missing reels for more than 40 years, that have been selected to make up Dave's Picks Volume 6. The first major return of material to the vault since 2005's Houseboat Tapes, Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature never-before-heard material from 2/2/70 Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO and 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Long a mystery, the riddle of the 2/2/70 set list has now been solved and the music restored to its proper - and spectacular - sequence. 2/2/70 is also notable as Tom Constanten had just left the band. Tom, however, makes his return to give his first-hand perspective on 12/20/69 in this volume's liner notes. Pigpen fiends, ask and you shall receive. Both shows feature loads of Pigpen including a major 35+ minute "Lovelight" from 12/20/69. Recorded by Bear with an excellent mix and sound quality, this very special release feels like a return to the classics.

If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard music, includes one of only three versions of "Smokestack Lightning" from 1969. You most certainly won't want to miss out on this highly collectible Dead!

Cannot wait for 2/2/70. A top 5 Dead year for me, and a new show to the vault? Yes please.
