Butch vs. New Violin player

Im going with Butch. As much as Id like to hear the classic violin lines, bringing Butch back without a violin would force them to hit reset on a lot of songs. Hed also be a counterbalance to Tim

I have a hunch he’ll back this summer. He’s easily able to cover Boyd’s parts and has the experience to do so + it leaves Boyd a space to come back. If this is the case, all Texas shows are a lock for me

I feel like another violin player, at least for a while, isn’t really going to bring anything new to the band. It might be better, but not new. Butch comes in able to not only cover those parts, but do something new with them relatively quickly. Of course my greatest wish would be that he’d be able to claw them back toward some sense of dynamic and tempo range. That said, I’d take a new violin over Minneapolis without even thinking about it.

After Minny I thought they need a new violin player for sure, but after taking a long ass break from DMB, I think Butch coming back is the best. It also leaves the door open for Boyd to come back muted and they can just play around him if he still sucks. Seems win-win to me and I suspect this is what they’re pursuing internally.

They’ll likely go into rehearsals the first week of May, so we should be hearing something very soon

Everyone on here hated butch for years now all of a sudden he’s a god again funny how that works. I was always a butch fan, you can backlog my posts go realize that. He’s not coming back though. It’s nice wishful thinking but I don’t think it’s happening nor do I think there will be a violin replacement. Either of those things would have been announced by now, we’re basically a month out from the tour.

I think the fact the band still hasn’t put out a statement is pretty bad though. Even though word got out quickly and most people seem to know, Not everyone that bought tickets follows the news surrounding the band or checks forums/message boards. There might be A lot of people going to these shows wondering where the hell Boyd is.

I always liked Butch, bar the occasional long-winded solo. Would be great if he returned, but I'm less optimistic about the possibility, especially since he basically got the shaft at that Charlottesville benefit. #gorealizethat

Yes, everyone and now they all see him as God. The Butch worship in this thread is embarrassing.

New violin player. Piano has never been essential to DMB’s sound, but as we saw already, a whole show without any violin just feels wrong.

Never got the love for Butch. Feel like the band slows down too much with him.

Absolutely. Violin in DMB is a must.

I dont think its worship, just the right person at the right time. They cant do boring solos anymore, theyd lose the crowd and theyre hypersensitive to that nowadays

I've said it before, hire The Demon Strings if Gorillaz isn't touring this year. Need third option for string section.

That sounds very cool. I wanted to raise the possibility of Butch only, think thatd be the biggest change in their sound ever with Boyd gone. Hed have to cover the Two Step intro and plucking parts, Too Much bridge etc

Yeah hed get totally drowned out by Tim and Carter. Having him there isnt going to make them adjust their playing that much or go back to how they used to be. You guys have to accept the DMB we currently have.

Ok, cool I get it. I'd go for Butch if his chops are in shape. They'd obviously fix the mix. The same techs worked with this guy for years. He could fill out the overall sound and actually play some competent solos, double weak parts, etc. If he's spent the last few months working I might buy a ticket this summer.

This band needs a violin. They don't need a piano player.

However, I'd welcome Butch back as long as he keeps his solos down to a minute or so. He's better just adding some depth to the music.

I'm a huge fan of Butch, and the Butch era of live performances, but I picked violin. Violin is too essential to the band's sound, and frankly after Boyd fucking up so consistently for so long, I think it'd be pretty great to hear all the violin parts played correctly for a change.

That said, I think Butch is much more likely, with my actual prediction being "neither".
