Rockbridge Guitars

Is it just me or do these guitars really suck?

Apparently Dave is friends with the owner and they look nice but...they sound so dull. They sound like playing an electric without an amp, they donít have a rich resonant sound

Iím sure they donít suck, but I never liked how they sound with DMB and even Dave and Tim. I agree that thereís not a whole lot of life or vibrancy to them. You can hear how much better Timís Martin is when they play together. But yeah itís by far my least favorite sound Dave has had.

what we hear of those guitar have a lot more to do with the type of pickup that is in it, and what eq is being placed on the pickup by the soundboard.

i've never played one, but i'd bet that when played acoustic or when recorded with microphones correctly placed at the sound hole and neck they sound way different, and probably head and shoulders better than any taylor that is out there.

Good point, but as is for Dave I think it sounds on the lower end.
I liked the Martin better than Taylor too, in particular for d&t

yeah i definitely agree that the general tone/eq and placement in the mix these days is not what i prefer. i'm partial to martin guitars, and always liked seeing dave play them when he did... '03 and '99 dave and tim for sure. before that it was i think mainly lakewood guitars, which honestly if you play me a '99 d&t song and a '97 d&t song, i don't think i could discern any difference between the sounds of the guitars. i think the change that we notice comes from maybe 2 things. 1, like i said, the pickup. '03 and prior d&t shows had a stage mic on the acoustics along with the pickup signal and they would have been blended. that stopped after '03 i'm almost certain. 2, i think daves playing, in terms of the angle of attack he takes with his right and left hands, has changed enough that it impacts the tone/sound he gets out of his guitar too.

either way, i agree the sound is noticably different, but i don't blame that on the guitar itself that he's playing.

Maybe they’re just not as good as they claim to be? I saw a couple YouTube clips of people playing Rockbridge and the tone sounds similar. No richness, no warmth. It’s really not ideal when you have Tim up there playing with all kinds of distortion

The Rockbridge is my least favorite guitar Dave has ever played. Honestly, I'm not even a fan of the look of the guitars. They are so basic looking. Bring back the 914ce.

Great poInt, Dave’s guitar is always drowned out in the mix which I think is a huge reason the band also sounds so “rock” and Tim heavy. The Taylor cut through the mix a lot more for sure. Even when Dave and Tim play by themselves I sometimes lose Dave’s guitar in the mix. The sound guys can always boost those frequencies but you can only do that so much until the guitar sound/tone starts to really suffer.

Maybe that’s just the schtick. The Rockbridge have a very sterile sound. Fine for Dave solo, but any other setting...not so much.

In those youtube medley, the Rockbridge sounds almost exactly as it does with DMB. On its own it sounds like a superior guitar, but with DMB it sounds lifeless.

This is an unrelated topic but i remember an interview with Tim in 2008. He said he listened to a live release from early in the tour (assuming Busch) and thought his tone was awful. I thought his tone was best in early 2008. The distortion is just way over the top nowadays, I think he sounded better with the Les Paul winter ‘98, but I wish he’d just do a cleaner sound. I’m fine with him going nuts on DIDO/Too Much/Help Myself but not so much on other songs

The rock is worse, sometimes you hardly hear the top string
