My whole team fucked up this weekend and I ended up being stuck digging myself out of sand for two hours extra today. Idiots.

My new manager was talking to me after it and made a comment about how its kind of shitty that the CTO said "we need to have someone intelligent working on this!" and my only response was "yeah thats our company for ya, they dont encourage or understand triage or troubleshooting and just want heads on spikes".

The look on his face was kinda priceless, hope shattered right in front of my eyes.

I miss the days of working til 11am on Fridays and days before holidays....now it seems i'm the only one competent (the only sucker) enough to handle things.

My first big assignment at my new job is to give a product demo to my boss. I’ve been writing and rewriting one sentence for half an hour now. Ugh. I can’t close this thing.

Itís the closing sentence of a hypothetical sales demo. Iím having trouble figuring out how to close in a way thatís relevant to my actual role, which isnít really sales.

Try to be generally hopeful about the proposed project. Tactfully admitting inexperience isn't a failure.

When I took my new job we had to scramble to find childcare for our kids. Everything around here is basically full, and we can barely afford any of them anyway, even with my higher salary. But we got super lucky when a friend of ours agreed to come three days a week for a very reasonable price. Today, after six days on the job, she backed out on us. No warning, no notice, just sent us a message letting us know that she changed her mind. And now we’re back to square one, stuck, in the middle of a work week, and have basically no options. I honestly don’t know what we’re going to do. We’re just fucked. I’m more depressed and anxious right now than I think I’ve ever been in my life.

Childcare is absolute hell. It’s either super expensive or super unreliable and there’s no in between. You don’t realize just how bad it is until you’re stuck. Maybe try the Nextdoor app or local Facebook groups to see if anyone can help or has any suggestions for your area? Call the local church to see if they have suggestions/recommendations? Sorry man, that’s the worst. Hang in there.

Jason has good recs. Can you call the woman who backed out on you and try to reason with her? Let her know you’ll spend every spare second trying to find care to replace her if she can just stick with you until you can un-fuck yourself? She must be a human being on some level.

Gotta love trudging out in -55 windchill to get to work. What is going to be great is that I have a hunch many, many firms and banks won't be in today, so it will be very slow. Could use some of that good old fashioned global waming today!

I want to beat my head through my iMac at work right now.

I have two people that directly report to me on the support team. Meanwhile I'm a higher level general purpose Engineer / IT Coordinator.

One of them has been here since what I imagine was the dawn of time and I suspect has not actually had to do anything or be accountable for anything since the 1990's. My whole job for the past 5 and a half years has been babysitting him and bailing him out of basic issues.

The other one got hired in August of 2017, went out on maternity leave in January 2018, came back for a month in may, left again for the whole summer then came back in September only to take every other weekend off for most of the remainder of the year. She's been burning through her time like a startup burns through runway, come to find out that she's pregnant again and about to go out on leave.

So basically I am REALLY glad I have already put in for the time off that I wanted for the shows because I'm about to start puling 12-14 hour days again with no backup. Fun times.

At least there will be lots of sweet sweet OT.

I’m getting the feeling that my boss is getting ready to take me out of my training period and move me into doing the actual job. This afternoon my mentor has suddenly been hanging around my desk giving me pointers and tips, taking me around to meet my sales reps and scheduling me for 90 minutes of training that appear to be separate from the official company training program. There’s definitely something going on that feels very different than the past month of training has.

I teach a class this morning starting at 8. It’s a commuter campus with students coming from as far as 90 mins away. Denver got hit with about 5 inches of snow yesterday. Wind chill is -20 right now.

I email my department chair yesterday at 4 looking for advice. I know attendance will be shit this morning. It’s slated to be an important lecture. Tuesday is a bit of a free day - so i figure save everyone a hassle and move the important stuff to Tuesday. What do I do to reward students who battle through and show up? How can I punish a student for not wanting to drive/stand in dangerous conditions?

I hear nothing until 5 am today “you cannot cancel class if campus is open.” Nothing else.

Well thanks for the help! Will my class break 40% attendance? 30?

I think I'm getting promoted, not really a work sucks thing but its more of a pretty big life shift if it ends up working out.
