one trick i like for stay is to put a capo on the first fret so that some of the accidental open strings don't sound so bad, and that F chord can be played as a nice open E shape

that definitely solves the key issue... a lot of times when I'm just wanting to play it for the hell of playing it, I play it in A and drop the shapes down one fret.

If I remember correctly, when Dave and Tim played in back in 99 they actually played it in A with an open 5 string droning over the main riff

hahaha I'm not the one to ask, I'm just showing you what Dave Matthews is doing.

Though honestly the only reason I'm playing that chord like that is because it's a tutorial on "how to play it like Dave Matthews" ... if I'm just playing it for shits and giggles my fingers usually fall into a C# minor 7 right there

Personally, as a player, I always wanted to play just like Dave Matthews for a really long time. I know there are other players out there who hope for the same, so I wanted to put some of the things I've learned out there for others who may just be beginning the process. I know there are a thousand tutorials already out there, but I've found that a lot of them just kind of suck or don't teach the right things. So I'm making some tutorials for guitar players for some DMB songs as the mood strikes.

I've done two so far. One on the rhythm to Two Step and one on how to play Warehouse.
If you're a guitar player looking for some ideas of how to approach these songs, I hope these tutorials can help you out.
If there are specific songs that you're having difficulty learning, I'd be glad to try to make a video on them if there's not already a sufficient one out there covering it.

As always, Tim offers these up for free. Detailed as they come. Many thanks pal. Big fan of Fool To Think. Really complex tune. Wish I had recognized that back in 2001.

One of the things I love about Dave Matthews as a guitarist is the way the interior tones and bass tones play a role in his songwriting. It's like his signature thing or atleast one of the big ways he uses the acoustic guitar creatively. The stretches and position of note choices, at least to me, seem deliberate and to be about where he finds a droning note or bass notes to syncopate against the higher register.

Tim has an incredible ear and finds these things. Incredible.
