Our interview with Béla is live! He is the absolute man and we just loved getting to talk to him. HUGE shoutout to Brandon for setting this up and making it happen.

There are some unreal tidbits in here from how he learned DMB songs, being in the studio for BTCS, the epic 32 min #41, Jeff joining DMB and so on. Hope y'all enjoy! YouTube and Apple Podcast links below.

This was a great listen today, i've never heard an interview with Bela before, he did not disappoint. Great hearing his praise for how Lillywhite worked with this band and his insight into why they stopped doing sound check from the stage and moved it into the dressing room (though i don't agree with this).

This is fantastic. One of the cooler things I’ve listened to in a long time. Good for you guys for getting this done and asking the right questions. All respectively asked.

Goes to show how much Béla respects the Dave and band. Get this guy on tour or a member of the band. He kinda sorta sounds game.

Great interview. Bela is an amazing interviewee since he has such a great memory and knowledge of music. Cool to hear him talk about BTCS. Loved the tidbit about him sitting on the side of the stage playing along to the show. He's a true junkie.

That was great. Thanks!

I would love to see Corea and Fleck play live. Loved their album they put out years ago:

Bela seems like such an awesome dude. Would love to drop Rashawn and add Bela for a tour, that would be utterly wild. I think he'd find a way to fit banjo into pretty much all their tunes and make it sound good.

This really was great... bela seems incredibly down to earth. Obviously the dmbC is great, but I enjoyed hearing about his overall musical journey.

Side note, has Bela ever guested on Rapunzel? Weirdly, I could totally hear him, Jeff, buddy and Tim trading off solos (flecktone style) over the ending. I purposely left rashawn out of that.

Edit: rapunzel happened 9/15/00 and 5/20/98. Need to dig those out!

I'll never understand the decisions by this band, but dropping Rashwan and Buddy for Bela and keeping Jeff would up the musician level. It would be an All-Star player lineup so to speak. Alas, it seems the band would rather fizzle out than push each other to be better at their craft.

I don't see how anyone could listen to this iteration of the band and think Buddy was the problem, but whatever.

I saw these two play together at Symphony Hall in Boston somewhere in the 2007-2010 range. I cant remember the exact year, but it was one hell of a show. Just two absolutely elite musicians playing together.

It's ridiculous. And as much I love Bela, I don't want a banjo on every song.

While true, I don't need some one-off piano guy on every song so they can "jam" out to LB or whatever he gets "solos" on. From the interview we know Bela would compliment the songs quite nicely as he speaks about looking for just the right notes at just the right spaces and understands when space is needed.

DMB has a piano guy up there just to make noise again because they lost their violin player.

Shit, I hate getting sucked back into this crap...the band could be so much better.....

Maybe this sentiment was buried in your post, but I think Bela would know when a tune doesn’t need him and just go chill at monitor world and/or be quiet until he was appropriate again. Dislike the most of Ross’ contributions as I do, he does that for some tunes, Roi did it for some tunes (or parts of tunes). If in some magical world we got Bela full time for a tour, he would certainly not appear on every song.

Thanks for all the kind words and for listening! Béla joining them for an entire tour would be incredible. I don't think it'll ever happen since he's 62 and has a 2 year old lol. I've just got my fingers crossed for live shows in general next year, but especially for The Flecktones making it to The Gorge.

Also I know not having a violin sucks, but I think Buddy is a main reason this band is still going strong. He's kind of rejuvenated them and as long as they're happy up there and performing I'll be going to see them. Adding a violin would be nice though!

We'll be back with a Gorge episode the week of Labor Day so be on the lookout.

I’d take it on every song 8 days a week. Tim and Rashawn out, Bela in.
