Up and Away is Dave's most underrated song among hardcores

This song never gets much love, and for the life of me I can't figure out why. It's a sweet song lyrically, has some of Dave's best and seemingly most demanding vocals, and has arguably some of his more difficult guitar parts.

Yet, no one talks about it. Why?

Dodo
So Damn Lucky
Some Devil
Save Me
Oh

All seem to get a lot of love from fans and/or from Dave and the band. But where did Up and Away go? (obvious answer is up and away, of course)

I think there's a three way tie for my favorite songs on Some Devil between So Damn Lucky, Save Me, and Up and Away...I just wish the latter would see the light of day and get more recognition as a truly great song from fans as opposed to the (slightly) overrated Dodo, which isn't great lyrically and nothing special on the guitar.

Up and Away 2018. Let's start the movement.

It's always been a fun but somehow forgettable song, for me. That being said, I think DMB could do great things with it and I'd love to see it live again. I certainly like it better than Oh (which gets love from Dave live). I also like it more than Baby, Gravedigger, and Grey Blue Eyes.

If we're talking about underappreciated SD songs, I think Too High and Trouble are both in the running and deserve to be brought back live. Even ahead of Up and Away.

But first, Dodo. Definitely Dodo first.

3.0 should be crushing Too High.

Up and Away also has quite a bit of organ on it. Maybe that's part of the reason they don't play it.

I love it, along with the rest of that album. Great riff, great melody, good shit

There's a one off D&T version I'll upload later that is great too. I think it was played at the first full D&T show since SD was released and they were trying alot of the songs out. Too bad that one didn't stick around

I don't know if I think it's forgettable, but it's definitely not a favorite of mine. In fact, I think that the sweetness of the song works against it for me. It just seems kind of, I don't know, saccharine, a little vacant to me. I don't dislike it, but it's not a song I ever get a craving to listen to.

For me it's Too High that's Dave's most underrated song by the hardcores. Up and Away is right up there as well. It's a bummer Dave has totally forgotten about them because D&F nailed both of em.

Up and Away kind of reminds me of Rooftop, in terms of where it's placed on the album, its kind of cheesy lyrics, it's strong guitar parts, yet somehow doesn't add up to more than a good but not amazing song.

Up and Away reminds me of Write a Song. The lyrical content is similar and they both have a familiar, swinging upbeat tempo.

Actually yeah I see that too. And both songs are good, yet I forget they exist fairly often. Doesn't help that I haven't seen Write a Song live in 6 years.

I always thought Time Bomb and The Rift were poor attempts at another Too High. A song that slowly builds into a big, loud guitar and drums driven jam.

Except Too High owns. Time Bomb is a turd and The Rift never really went anywhere.

Cheesy lyrics?

"Once upon a time, when the world was just a pancake..."

I mean, I like Dodo, but it's so, so overrated by the hardcores.

I've always liked Up and Away. Yes, it's a sleeper, but that's a happy fact to me.

I think if you mess around a little on guitar you have a different kind of appreciation for Up and Away. It's a really creative, challenging, fun song. It's great guitar work and when you combine that with a great vocal delivery, I really don't know how people can't find themselves liking it.

I think if it got more live treatment early on more people would appreciate it in terms of how great of a musical performance it is. I suspect Dave doesn't play it because it's one of those really hard to play and really hard to sing classic-Dave-type of songs.

Sure that's a cheesy line too. But as a complete package, I've always loved Dodo. And what D&F did with it live has always made me badly want to hear it with DMB, if only to hear the sax.

Too high is the some devil song I want to hear the most. Though I fear the musical director would change the mood of the song like he did to rhyme and reason.

So Damn Lucky, Stay or Leave and Gravedigger are definately the best tracks from SD (maybe add Dodo to that list) and they get the most play live (besides solo Dave, "Oh"). Something that finally makes some semblance of sense with DMB
