Dumb questions customers ask and me not being able to give a smarts answer. I work in a grocery store, customer comes in and asks "Do you sell ice cream?" The customer I was helping was just staring at me hoping I'd say something or roll my eyes. I could tell by his expression that he thought it was a dumb question to.

So I interviewed with another company last week, one that seems about 1,000x better than my current one in every which way possible, and after six interviews, four reference submissions (two managers, two former colleagues), and having to find all sorts of creative ways to dodge out of the office to go through all of those interviews...I'm waiting for their decision.

This is torture. I'm sitting at my current job wondering how much I really need to give a shit about all the crap they've dumped on me recently. All I want is for that moment of true freedom where I realize I don't have to care about anything that happens here anymore.

A few frustrations with the job hunt... especially with NCAA bullshit athletics.

1. No one responds to anything. You apply for a job, you email or call to follow up and people ignore you. These fucking people can't take 20 seconds to write, "thank's for your interest, but the position has been filled." Fuckers.

2. These jobs that require you to fill in information regarding your resume/prior work experience... then ask you to submit your resume. You spend hours uploading info and then they just ask you to attach a word doc of your resume at the end.

3. The NCAA has a bullshit rule where all jobs must be posted for two weeks. The problem is, many of these jobs aren't actually available. They legally have to post them, so you go through points 1-2 above, then they disappear and no one looks at your information because they already had someone in mind to hire in the first place.

3) Yea, that explains why I see postings for the Head Football/Basketball/Baseball/Etc. Coach at D1 institutions.

so update. HEre is what I have learned about this guy since March

He was runner up to be an astronaut to Mars
He made $85,000 working at a call center for Verizon and had a $3500 a month condo in St Augustine
When he was in high school he was the 3rd fastest kid in Florida and could run a 3 and a half minute mile
he was a cop for 3 years and was flown all expenses paid to LA to try out to be a sheriff
he spent several years in witness protection because he witnessed the Florida mafia skin his best friend alive
he can cook a steak on a $10 charcoal grill so good I will never order steak at a resturant ever again
he can't get frostbite or hypothermia because he has the ability to internally raise his body temprature whenever he would like
he can play any song ever on drums. No specifics he just said if I name a song he can play it
he started playing guitar 6 months ago and can play every metallica song note for note

he has also told numerous stories of beating people up at random. By random I mean no matter what we are talking about he will find a way to reference a time he beat someone up

A lot of these skills would be really useful on Mars.

Just saying...

I'm closing in on burnout again. I need to find out if I got that other job, because my current workplace is so bad it currently has me questioning whether I really need a paycheck to survive for a while. Defaulting on my student loans, car, and minor credit debt is beginning not to sound too bad.

I've learned that at my current workplace I can go exactly three months before I need a complete mental break for about two weeks. The mental stress is seriously overwhelming at times.

And I'll be honest. I didn't even get to the office until 9:40 today. I'm going to leave at 4:45. I know people will notice, but I'm so fried that I don't care whatsoever. There's this twisted side of me that almost wants them to just fire me, even though I'm one of their most productive employees. I'm just done.

I would complain about my job more, but this summer has been mild so all of the crazy people have been nice and cool in their crazy houses. But when it hits 90 out I will be singing a different tune...

I'm a Project Manager for a really, really shitty Home Health and Hospice Medical Software Company.

By Project Manager, you would think that means I simply manage projects.

Wrong.

That's about 40% of what I do. Build project plans, manage risk, assign tasks, manage tasks, manage customer calls, manage issues lists, etc. Another 40% is I configure the software and handle the data import process (where we take data from their legacy system, scrub it, and upload it into ours) after every sale. There is no supporting documentation on how to configure the software because the Engineers who wrote the platform 20 years ago (literally) never documented anything. So you literally have to guess your way through 1,000's of configurations. Then we have these old hag trainers go out and train (JUST) the front end functionality, and when they do, they make these ad-hoc configuration change requests without telling you exactly what to change. They'll just say something like, "Hey PM, the Daily Activity Record needs to be able to be run by discipline and non-billable Visit Reasons." But remember, there's no documentation or training that teaches you how to do it. So you spend your day asking anyone and everyone how it can be done. Imagine situations like that, about 20 times per day.

Then the other 20% is trying to figure out how to do all of the things the rest of the people on your project are too lazy/stupid/busy to do. Today I was asked to configure payroll for one agency, which has about 60 what's called "payroll rules." You see, in Home Care and Hospice Care, almost every employee can be paid differently. Thus, there is special logic in place for each and every one of those unique pay scenarios. The logic that needs to be used to calculate each of these rates is not documented. Thus, you have to guess your way through and watch it break 100 times before you MIGHT get it right. All the meantime, the customer is freaking out at you that they cannot process their payroll. Again, not something you would think a Project Manager has to do, right?

Oh, something else from today. A customer I took over (from a guy who up and quit) can not send their claims to Medicare. Why? Because the paperwork you need to process to the Medicare "Fiscal Intermediary" (basically a middle man that reviews and processes the claims coming out of the software) won't get accepted. It keeps getting rejected, so the customer cannot bill. Why is the paperwork being rejected, you ask? Because two Fiscal Intermediaries merged into one (there are a bunch of them) and our unique submitter ID is not being accepted due to the merger. What's more fucked up is the acquiring company in that merger is the company who's submitter ID we've always used, but for some reason they want us to apply for and use a submitter ID granted by the Fiscal Intermediary that was acquired. How the fuck does that make sense? All the while the customer is pissed that they cannot submit claims. Keep in mind whenever the paperwork is submitted, the Fiscal Intermediary wants about 10 business days to process it. So if it gets rejected yet again, I won't know that it did, or why it did, for about 10 days, which puts the customer in flux because they need the revenue to literally stay in business. Who's this thrown on to figure it out, even though I have nothing to really do with it because we have supposed financial "specialists" and "trainers" that should be figuring it out? Me, of course, because none of them want to touch it!

Throw in that there was an "upgrade" a month ago that has fucked up all printing and reporting out of the software, which has taken engineering weeks to resolve and thus left dozens of customers PISSED and taking it out on the PMs, and you have a recipe for one of the worst places to work, EVER.

And did I mention despite all of this my company is looking to cut staff? The investors are looking for a better return! All while customers regularly point out to me that they can tell they were oversold and that we're understaffed.

And before someone says, "Where'd you find the time to write all of this, then?" please note that I'm doing so while I wait 15 minutes for a Configuration Tool that was built in 1998 to load.

I might punch a baby before the day is through.
