Sadly, the 12 string now a days pretty much guarantees you're getting Grey Street.

Definitely would love to see him write more songs with this thing.

Big Eyed Fish has been pretty popular the last few years. There was a huge comeback in 2010 but had steady play every year since.

True, but your first expectation when that thing comes out should be Grey Street, no?

Getting anything other than Grey Street tends to be a surprise.

Didn't he play Minarets a handful of times on the 12 string? Rapunzel too right?

squirm was also played on the 12-string during D&T, at least.

What's the current 12-string roster? From what I know...

Grey Street
Big Eyed Fish
Bartender
Raven
Sweet Up and Down
JTR
Kit Kat Jam
The Last Stop
When the World Ends (can't remember if this is still the case, but I remember it was a few years back)

Minarets yes, at least once on 8/29/00. I'm not sure about Rapunzel, but he did play the 12 on PNP Grey Street on 10/8/10. [Only registered users can see links.]

Not anymore on WTWE. The only year I think he used the 12 for that was 2007.

That PNP was definitely what I was thinking about, thanks.

I miss all of the old guitars. His newer custom ones don't have as rich of a tone to my ear, particularly songs played on 12's.

I loved that guitar. Is it officially retired? I feel like the last time I saw it or it was used was on The Riff at Deer Creek '14.

I don't like Rockbridge's very much either...

Depends on when it is in the set.

if its late, 100% grey street. if not, then im going BEF or hoping for Last Stop (which im 0/1000000000000000 on guessing)

Agreed. Some of DMB's best songs were written on the 12, and honestly can't think of any bad ones that were. What was the last song written on the 12? YNK? If so, damn its been a long time.

The 12 is the best guitar to see put out on the stage before the show starts because you know you are going to get a great opener. No song he currently uses on the 12 is a bad song. Even grey street, wich most of us are tired of, is a fantastic as an opener.

Now I tell you the worst is seeing the little red guitar put out on stage before the show. That's 100% going to be a squirm opener and I think it completely sucks as an opener.

as far as what we hear through the recordings or mains at a concert in terms of the guitar's "richness or thinness" that falls more on the pickup and how front of house decides to eq it... i suspect that the custom guitars have a discernible difference in quality of tone (for the good) over pretty much any taylor guitar.

also, on the thinness, i wouldn't be surprised if dave is playing lighter gauge strings than he used to as he gets older and maybe doesn't want to work as hard to fret the note. medium gauge strings (like he played in the '90s and 00's) definitely have a thicker and punchier sound than light gauge string. that might have more to do with the loss of attack we used to hear

I feel like the old Jimi Thing uninspiring soloing he used to do negates this possibility, but it has been a long time since those days, maybe he is better than he ever shows these days.
