History of "off-season" tours

Thinking back through the various non-summer tours they've done, they're a bit all over the place in terms of quality and how much (or little) they resembled the summer of that year. Working backwards

Fall 2012: Uneven, much more AFTW heavy. A little bit of trouble building momentum in sets with all the new songs in there. I also thought they fell too far into the LOUDER FASTER thing

Fall 2010: IMO the best run of the year, and one of (if not the) best runs of 3.0. Some kind of uneven ends of sets, but they played their asses off this tour. Early summer 2010 was cool with the breakouts, the rest of the tour got uneven.

Spring 2009: I really liked this tour. Not super varied, but some really cool stuff in regular rotation (Pig, Recently, Dreaming Tree), and the BWGK at the time was a breath of fresh air given the previous few years.

Fall 2005: Meh. No 34 and YNK. Some of the Stand Up stuff had started to fall off. Dream Girl was interminable.

Fall 2002: Mixed bag. The good stuff is classic (James Brown, Loving Wings, lots of Captain). There are some pretty uninspired shows, especially by 'Roi. This was a really long year, and they were probably gassed by this tour.

Spring 2002: Sounded like a renaissance after '01. Pig, Raven, Busted Stuff, Heartbeat intro, some of the Everyday stuff coming around (So Right, Fool to Think, What You Are, Everyday)... probably my personal peak of fandom.

Fall 2000: Meh. Cortez was a cool break out, as were the Dave and Carter Halloweens. But some *really short* and meh shows. Nowhere near the heights of Summer 2000.

Fall 1998: Pinnacle of the band. Enough said.

Someone who's more qualified can compare Fall 1996.

I was robbed in Fall '10. Went to Boston N2 and MSG N2. Boston N2 was a subpar set for that tour and MSG N2 Dave's voice was shot and he botched the Last Stop closer...

Fall '05 brought out Pig and Recently which had been missing through the entire summer tour (aside from Red Rocks) and also Minarets, but yeah. I was luckier in Fall '05, MSG N2 that year was one of the best shows of that year and the Boston set was good for about 2/3 of the show until they phoned in the rest.

I disagree with Fall 2000; I thought it was stellar and the last real tour with just the 5 members.....I know Dave was sick toward the end and the sets weren't all that varied, but much like '04, I'll take quality over quantity. My first show was 12/8/00 and it was, to this day, one of my absolute favorites from start to finish.

Even bad tours had good shows... nobody would ever dump on 12/8 or 12/13 from Fall '00 but that doesn't mean it was a good tour.

Yeah 12.8.00 is a classic. One of my favorite Roi solos on that OSW.

I listened to 12/11 not too long ago and it was a fantastic show, as well. I don't know, I think having better tapes from that run might help people look more favorably upon it, but still.

MSG in 2000 were my 2nd and 3rd shows and I was really glad to have gotten to see them as just the Five for two really solid sets.

I loved my 2012 shows with 11/30, 12/01, 12/21 all having really different vibes and they felt like huge parties.

12.11 and 12.16 were my 3rd and 4th shows. 12.16 was the first time I was super close seeing them. I have great memories from them, but they’re nowhere near as good as the summer.

LLD from 12.11 has a pretty great near train wreck IIRC.

MSG in 2000 still had a vibe about it.

MSG in 2018 has no vibes about it.

I don't think there's really been a "bad" fall tour. They've all had some killer moments and special shows. If you had to pick one it'd be 2012 just because like others have mentioned..no "vibe" and too much AFTW. If you love that album, that's another story, but if you weren't very keen on it, that tour would have been brutal.

I thought the 2005 Fall Tour was garbage, save for Minarets.

Yeah but even that tour had some special shows, like 12.10.05 MSG, as well as some fun guest spots and compared to the Summer '05 tour, was miles better in terms of song selection.

Why? That show, especially stacking it up to the rest of the band's history, is trash.

Let's look at this one on paper:

Spoiler:
1. Pantala Naga Pampa
2. Rapunzel *
3. What Would You Say
4. #41 *
5. One Sweet World *
6. So Much To Say *
7. Seek Up
8. Hunger For The Great Light *
9. Minarets
10. Dream Girl
11. Linus And Lucy *
12. Stand Up *
13. Jimi Thing *+
14. Smooth Rider *~
15. Louisiana Bayou ~*

-------- ENCORE --------

16. Christmas Song
17. Halloween
18. Ants Marching

SHOW NOTES:
* Rashawn Ross
+ Mike Doughty
~ Robert Randolph

Right off the bat, it's 2005 and you've got Rashawn all over most of it. The Doughty and RR guest spots are complete throwaways and the back end of the set is awful. Sorry that I'm not impressed with Linus and Lucy.

The encore is perfect. I'll give you that. And sure, the main set had Seek Up and Minarets in 2005, which is definitely a plus.

I don't understand how this show stands out in any way. Maybe it'll sound better, listening back. I'll add it to the list and give it a listen today/tomorrow.

It must be one of those show's where you had to be there, i don't know what else to say. We had a great time at this show, with a great crowd. Like i said, i'm sorry you can't understand that from listening to the tape. But it was a top 5 show attended for ME, not the band's history.
