Saying you'd rather DMB play their songs the same way they always have, even if they sound like shit... doesn't need a cute analogy, it's just plain stupid.
no no, I didn't mean the same way, just with the same people and instruments. I like hearing the violin in the songs, that's one reason why I like DMB. They've changed songs up throughout the years and I have no problem with that.

Yah but you can't replace Roi, and if Boyd is going to skree through his 18 minute Nancies solo, I'd rather they switch it up, or just don't play the song anymore. Obviously I'd rather Boyd played lol, he's had some great moments the last couple years, and some awful ones the past 5ish

It's amazing people on this board say they like DMB, yet don't like the original sound. It's like saying you guys like Saved By the Bell: New Class better than the original.
no one's saying that, fucking stop it.

Read back on show reviews from 08 thru 2010. Boyd was a highlight at most of the shows I attended.

Boyd has become more of just a soloist. He used to be playing bits and pieces throughout the song, which I feel like he doesn't do as much.

You're the only one then. I'm not saying he wasn't prominent, i'm saying he shouldn't have been lol. I mean, last year at Bethel he was amazing, a lot of last year was better, but 2006ish and definitely 08 and 09 were awful. Idk, I'm also really sensitive to high-pitched noises, as in they're painful for me, so skreeing sucks ass. I have to wear earplugs either way but i've got tapes... he doesn't sound any better.

And I agree that he's more of a soloist now and would personally prefer he got back to writing parts and playing them properly.

I really thought back in '06 and '07 that this song was going somewhere. It's a shame that we never got this track on "Little Red Bird" either

One of my favorite fills he plays is during the Lillywhite version of Big Eyed Fish towards the end of the song. Just beautiful.

agreed, key word is properly though. if he's just going to sound like shit i'm fine with them keeping him in the corner until his nightly nancies/ants/billies/etc solo

I remember at the start of the 09 summer tour (SPAC shows/early June) everyone was saying how Boyd was on fire. And the tapes sound pretty good- some good LIOGs and Dive In outros.

I know for me Boyd has been the highlight of some 2010 shows. Nancies/Crush/Ants.

he hasn't been consistently terrible for these 3 years straight, but from my recollection it's been more negative than positive. and the bad nights have been really bad and the good nights are considered "good" because he basically just didn't fuck up, not because he was doing anything really extraordinary.

I feel like Boyd is someone you just get used to though in a way... His parts are his parts, and his solos his solos. He never blows anyway away outside of a solo. He's never been the type to just blow me away in terms of performance as much as his energy and presence. I like his parts to songs (Eh Hee for example), but he doesn't "nail" anything in a really dramatic way unless he's doing a solo.

i'm no expert on violinist's, but when was the last time he really nailed a solo in a dramatic way? i feel like when he goes into a solo is when you should really brace yourself for the worst.

edit: he's important, but over time the more violin players i randomly see the more i believe boyd just isn't all that good.

Boyd was much better in the 1990's. He's too strong now to play smoothly IMO.

I don't think Boyd's problems stem from adapting to a new sound; he was having issues way, way before Tim and Jeff entered the picture.
