I still think the reason we don't hear him live is that the arrangement he makes no are so rudimentary that they become inaudible in the midst of the more layered sound they have live now.

well yes, we all know boyd was absent on BW. that doesn't need pointed out anymore. but he's as prominent on Gaucho as any other "classic" DMB song that he didn't solo on. he shouldn't just be playing something literally at all times just to do so. he's playing when he's needed in that tune.

Disagree. There are several video examples where he's completely on mute. There's even one of blackjack where they decide to turn him off.

this is possible, but there's that video of Blackjack from 2010 where you hear him start to play his part at the beginning then his sound is promptly turned off while he continues to play.
