yea, the chorus is definitely what makes the song. and that chocolate rain shit that Buddy is playing over it really works.

Someone should’ve told him to work on the chorus lyrics a little longer.

I want to say it sucks because that’s how I feel. But I think it has a chance to turn into something

Pretty hard to beleive this song and Come Tomorrow would be on the same album. This song is light years better than CT. I think Dave will get better at singing live as it progresses. Hope they play this a lot and flesh it out this summer. I think it has potential to become a real live staple.

Okay, given the themes of the album, I can see why Bismarck didn't make the cut. Should've been an iTunes exclusive though. But Death on the High Seas? It's not a great song by any stretch, but it has a moodiness to it. It's lyric is not complete cheese. Hell, Dave even said he wrote it for his children, not some other folks' children like CT. Would've made a better penultimate track if it had to be. I'm not embarrassed to hear it.
(I gotta stop with the "what-ifs". Gonna drive myself crazy.) |

It's barely a stone's throw out of Crummy County.

It's catchy though. In fact the more I listen to this song, the less I like it. It may have an intricate guitar riff compared to other songs, but it's bland in overall construction, aside from the catchy chorus which is rubbishly worded. (See I can use words clumsily, too!) The horns initially sound neat because of the effects, but quickly reveal their unimaginative structure. If it reminds me of any other "alternative" band, it's Foo Fighters, a mostly bland rock act. Serious question... but did everyone think that Dave was a poet in the past? Dreaming Tree/Seek Up those were the exceptions not the rule. I really think people over inflate Dave's writing ability. He was never a great lyricist IMO.

Maybe it's simply the poor music exposing his weaknesses even more?

Ding ding. I think the music was just better and it didn't stand out as much.

I think that’s true, but I also think that Dave’s lyric writing has notably declined along with the music. Just maybe not to the same extent.

Agree to this. Problem is, I don't think he's able/willing to throw in a gem like The Stone, Dreaming Tree, Spoon every now and then. Hell, the closest he got IMO was Bismarck and it got cut.

I think the profundity of Dave's lyrics was always a bit overstated but he had a good way of serving the song and wrote lyrics that just sounded good. Not everything has to be a lyrical masterpiece as long as it's just nice to listen to and flows with the music. I think some of the simplification of the music and him becoming way too overt and on the noise with his writing has made it stick out way more now.

List the 5 worst lyrics from BTCS. Then, list the 5 worst lyrics from Come Tomorrow, just the song. I bet I know which is worse.

He's really just rarely clever or abstract with his lyrics now. And listen to his best adlibs pre06 and you can see he did have a bit of lyrical genius in him back then. |
