yea. I think it's my fav of the new batch although ME made me pay attention, kinda like when I first heard Squirm. I was like, the fuck :smoke

Poth Ead 01-12-2022 05:54 PM

BEF > Bartender 7.28.02

middle of the road performance wise. from WH8v4. Still, it's a 2002 performance and from Saratoga Springs. A show I barely remember and I was there :upyours

Next night was the better show, which puts a hit on the memorability of this one.

Just went back to the Dave and Tim Dreaming Tree from Farm Aid…what a performance.

Pig opener, a little midset KKJ/#41/Raven/LW. But the crowd went bezonk for the solo Nancies

I think after Dave says, "We're very indulgent. Tim and I never played that one before."

This year they should do YNK.

Nice Warehouse after that Pig as well.

I actually expected them to play it this year for the same reason. It seems whatever song is getting a lot of play at the time full band makes its way into the Farm Aid set.

Still one of my favorite shows I've attended.

I actually really enjoy the Bartender from the night before. There's nothing extraordinary about it, but it's a great sounding 2002 Bartender. Happy to have it on a Warehouse disc.

I'm excited to see these Mexico sets (if it doesn't get canceled). I have a feeling YNK might show up.

So many random performances here and there throughout the band's history.

Mercy (Ft. Roger Smith) 9/4/13 - Sounds nice. Dave is on piano for the whole thing, I believe.

patsfan39 01-17-2022 11:20 AM

I think Roger Smith is the one playing piano.

I never thought they nailed If Only live… they played it way too slow and Dave always struggled to sing it. They just never got it right imo. It’s one of few songs I like off AFTW but it’s just missing something live and it really boring. Carter is also just way too basic on it. Thought he’d spice it up more but it’s probbaly the least interesting song he plays from a drumming perspective

Yep. It's a shame because I think it's a really good song. They did do a great job with it in the studio.

Thanks gweeps. Thanks for posting.

I finally listened to one of these versions of it. At least they cut out the 2 extra minutes of a fade-out. But buddy just played ambient chords in the background. Surprising no one did anything in the 2nd half of the song including Tim.

patsfan39 01-23-2022 01:53 AM

So do I. 2004 was an excellent year. How they could've gone from that to Stand Up is more baffling than from LWS to Everyday. At least there they were burnt out. And the addition of Ross held promise until it turned out he played the way he does. Then Roi died, and Jeff eventually stopped soloing on certain songs, etc etc etc.

Also, 2004 seems like the last year Boyd was consistently good/great. And the auds were mostly fantastic that year.

I dont think this gets talked about enough, but i think Boyd had some really good moments in 2008 & 2009. there is that famous video of him butchering his parts in Help Myself at the gorge, but i thought he was pretty on for most other shows that year. I think he definitely had a chemistry with Roi that he never built with Jeff and Rashawn because they were either playing off each other or were focused on learning the material Roi played vs playing with boyd.

It was 100% the last full year.

For me, there were flashes of brilliance in early '06, late '07, early '08, early '10 and here and there this past year. But they haven't had a year since 2004. From June 17 to the end of Vote For Change, that was the last real good one.

Quick story. I had tickets 6.18. Burned a disc with the 3 debuts from the night before and the ggt from roo. That 6.18 good good time is worth a listen for the Carter intro. Not sure any other performances had that - if they did there were only a handful before they ditched it.

Forgot about that. Yeah, I think that was the only one. Probably going off the B'roo version.

Sidenote, I dislike the way GGT sounds now. Dave doesn't use a capo anymore, right?

edit: Listening now. I like the faster rhythm. I also see this version is the longest at over 9 minutes.

Chris Welch 01-24-2022 05:44 PM

Man. Dave's voice sounds so fucking good on this Camden show. Grey Street is a powerhouse.

SomeDevil17 01-24-2022 06:03 PM

I don't know, 2012 and even 2013 is pretty decent. Don't think those two years really get a lot of love yet. I'd say from 2014-2020 was not the best but has been getting better.

Decent? Yes. Great? No.

jeff1818 01-24-2022 09:02 PM

NP: 3/16/95 full-band acoustic for a TV program in Chicago. 4 songs. Decent tape. I remember liking this set back in the day. Something about March 95 grabbed me.

and now 3/17/95; full-band acoustic. FM sourced. Nice tape! Fun little show.

2012 was too AFTW heavy. If you enjoyed that album a lot than you view it differently but it was too much for me. Also Boyd was pretty bad most nights from recollection. Coming off barely touring in 2011 it was kind of a letdown how repetitive the sets were:

2013 gets quite a bit of love around here most say it was the best 3.0 tour (besides ‘08). It was great in terms of set variation and digging into the catalog, offered some great renditions or Crazy Easy, KKJ, etc. Buy yeah nothing post ‘08 has really matched anything prior.

patsfan39 01-25-2022 11:23 AM

I dont think 2012 was AFTW Heavy at all. Look at any show from June 2012 and its not even top 3. They didnt start playing that album until the winter.

Yup. Was reminded of 2012 last year when the new songs were played minimally.

I guess that's true, my recollection was from the shows I saw which were heavy on it. That being said I still don't think anything from that year really stands out, a LT from that year wouldn't get me excited, except for the fact that we don't have one for whatever reason. Anyone know why no 2012 show has been released? Plenty of individual tracks have been but not an entire show. Seems odd.

2012 was a great tour for me. Both deer creek and alpine were solid. In fact, 2012 was the last time I left a dmb weekend really blown away.

patsfan39 01-26-2022 12:39 PM

Jeff 100# elevated the song in 2012. First year hearing it for me and i got a much better appreciation for it.

7/5/03 SiriusXM broadcast

The music has room to breathe!

patsfan39 01-27-2022 01:36 PM

That Say Goodbye is elite. Theres nothing outwardly insane about it, but its at a point in the show that they are just totally comfortable and the music is absolutely perfect. Roi is fantastic, Dave's absolutely singing his heart out and Carter is himself on one of his most prominent songs.

CRUSHsoccer15 01-27-2022 03:09 PM

I know we got it as a Sirius show but we really need an official release of that Say Goodbye. It's perfect.

Rowsdower 01-27-2022 03:43 PM

I'm listening to this Say Goodbye now and feel like I'm missing something. To me it sounds like a pretty average performance of the song. Not really getting what makes it elite or perfect or anything.

patsfan39 01-27-2022 03:56 PM

Its hard to describe. And im sure if you just put it on out of the blue it might not stand out, but in the context of the show and other Say Byes its just really, really good.

CRUSHsoccer15 01-27-2022 04:31 PM

It admitedly benefits from being Alpine and we've always had a solid video of it available. I had that shit downloaded on my freaking video iPod.

dmb2much40 01-27-2022 06:02 PM

I remember everyone fawning over this performance right from the beginning. The improv lyrics in the last verse are good. And say goodbye had been a relative rarity for a few years heading into this performance. Not bad by any means, but probably a tad overrated because it was at Alpine.

patsfan39 01-28-2022 08:55 AM

Frankly, i had no idea that this Say Bye was well known by the community. I heard it on the Sirius stream, the next day of all things, and was struck by it just hearing it in the car. If the performance makes me turn my head out of the blue like that, i think there might truly be something to the fact that other people fawn over it too.

greykitkat36 01-28-2022 10:01 AM

Amazing how rare SayGoodbye has been. It basically gets 5-7 plays per year max, last time it got more than 7 plays in a year was 2010. Only played 50 times full band in the last 12 years.

For context, Cornbread has been played 163 times full band in that same timeframeÖit got 50 plays in just 2010 alone.

Proof that for whatever reason the band prefers certain songs in the catalog.

10.3.96 this show is phenomenal. I feel like I listened to an aud way back in the day but this is so much better than I remember. Dave is all sorts of amped up and I love that he played a solo watchtower. The whole encore is amazing.

sean52692 01-30-2022 01:40 PM

Loving Wings 6/25/08 - Gah damn, Tim & Roi. Refreshing and breezy as hell. One of my fav versions. Carter is underrated at the end.
PNP :segue Rapunzel 6/23/01 - Live Trax 31, heck of a version, great energy and Fonz sounds awesome in the mix.
Black and Blue Bird (Ft. Bela Fleck) 8/29/15 - Bela is all over the place, in the best way possible. Every note he adds is perfect and fits like a glove. A studio version with him would have been a no-brainer. Alas, we got Batson'd.

Iíve re-listened that, earlier on today, this is a famous one because back in time everyone was curious to hear Greg Howard on Dreaming Tree. But there something wrong in the mix of LT39. Howard is minor for most of the song, and I wasnít too impressed by his playing at the end. I was a bit disappointed

6/21/08 SPAC is my favorite released Dreaming Tree, however, it needs to be re-released so we can hear what Roi is doing on the pennywhistle! Release that whole damn show already.

Piedmont, 10/31, and 7/30 are great runner ups. I like the baritone Roi adds in 7/30.

That D&T version was a good call out. An underrated one.

Also worth checking out the 99s that Roi plays a soprano solo at the end. They’re listed on the almanac

They would be
7.17.99 - The Gorge (there is a SBD around)
7.25.99 - Austin, TX
8.6.99 - Hartford, CT

What are you currently listening to? (DMB edition)

Listening now Dreaming Tree 1999.07.17 - The Gorge
Ah RoiÖ
If this was released somewhere it would have been my favorite, probably

Iíve listened also to SPAC 2008.06.21 (Live Trax 2008) and I am convinced this is my favorite among the ones that you guys mentioned. RR is spectacular in the peak, and I also like Timís work in the outro. And it also has Eleanor Rigby at the end

How do you know that there was a pennywhistle part actually?

This was a dumb question. There is a (good) video of it and 7:14 - 7:40 Roi is clearly playing the pennywhistle

Removing it was really a weird choice. Why you want to do that?

Woke up thinking about this version. Haven't heard it in years. One of the very best.

Seek Up 7/30/01

Come to think of it, it's been like at least 5 years since I've gave it a listen too. Gonna do that later. I have no doubt it still holds up. Sad they can't let Jeff do the same thing on it he did back then. This band used to take so many more risks.

No idea! Maybe it was an error? I didn't notice any other problems like that on the Live Trax 2008 disc.

I always keep Seek Up 7/30/01 in the rotation. It's necessary DMB listening.

That would be the SPAC 01 Seek Up that was in Warehouse 5, Volume 2.
I have just checked: I have it in 10 of my favorite selections (!!). It is definitely a necessary DMB listening.
I donít know if I like more the intro or the outro. It is super jam.

This recording sounds quite loud to me Ö I have checked with MAAT meter (one of the dobyblue tricks) and it has a DR = 8 : Not so bad on paper, but this measurement was done on the lossy file, so, is not reliable. Still, it seems slammed and after a bit I need to turn the volume down a lot.

Some of the best seats in the house. Lucky dog.

Just started 2/10/95 and will run through 2/11/95 after. Haven't listened to these in quite some time.

dmb6743 02-11-2022 03:43 PM

Was just going through my list of LT's that I'm missing and need some help figuring out which ones to go after first. I think the answer might be 33 - Lupo's, 35 - Star Lake and 53 - Boise but wanted some opinions there (I could have sworn I had Lupo's but I guess not).

32 8.23.14 Greek Theatre
33 1.31.95 Lupoís
35 6.20.09 Star Lake
38 6.8.96 SPAC
43 7.27.04 Atlanta
44 9.4.16 Gorge
48 8.25.94 D&T Birchmore
49 6.18.19 D&T NY
53 11.2.98 Boise
55 4.29.09 Alpharetta
56 8.10.01 Toronto

Mersh 02-11-2022 04:20 PM

33 for sure.

Mersh 02-11-2022 04:20 PM

I also like 38, but it isn’t a must have.

dmb2much40 02-11-2022 04:23 PM

IMO the only must haves on that list are 33 & 35

brian3641 02-11-2022 04:29 PM

I know I might be in the minority, but I dig 43

gweeps 02-11-2022 04:34 PM

11/2/98 (53) is incredible. Such energy.
