original post
It's almost that time again, broke out a couple shows today for the first time since the Fall tour ended.

Let's keep this fairly consistent.

5 star system in increments of 1/4. I always have a hard time at the beginning of getting back into the habit picking good shows to check out.

So today was 2002 day:

April 7, 2002 - *** 1/4. some good stuff, I like the early YNKs, the BS stuff that's now rare like Busted and Raven; some solid old filler. Obviously great Bartender, very good Heartbeat intro.

July 25, 2002 - **. This show was the bottom side of average for me tonight. Dave butchered Pig and So Right, Cry Freedom I'm sure was a tremendous surprise 4 years ago at the show, but it's neither 4 years ago, nor am I at the show, and I docked a 1/4 * due the WWYS encore closer. Loving Wings was still boring. The 1 - 2 Captain and Kit Kat Jam punch earn a good * 1/2 by themselves.

I think tomorrow is a 1999 sort of day.

You are a cold, cold man.

celluloid hero 04-26-2006 12:46 AM

I'm grading strictly. I figure:

** is bottom of average
*** is pretty damn good
**** is bordering on special

ethaxton 04-26-2006 01:22 AM

I just listened to 8.31.2000 (Va Beach). I give it a ***1/2 for a pretty sweet setlist

celluloid hero 05-11-2006 10:46 PM

July 2, 1997 - **** 1/4

Huff 05-11-2006 10:53 PM

I popped 11/20/98 in last night: *** Really solid show. Tim guesting on the entire show. Sweet Last Stop to open. Bela guesting on a number of tunes, including one hell of a solo on LIOG (sorry Rob ;) ) and an insane duel with Tim during Two Step. Proudest Monkey out of left field. Strangest "hits" encore I've ever gotten (Satellite, Billies)

Solid show. Not a classic in comparison to many out there, but highly enjoyable.

celluloid hero 05-11-2006 10:56 PM

I like that show. My first. It's the only LIOG out of my 27 that I wouldn't trade. Monkey is top (TOP) notch. 3/4 * docked for the encore.

paratroopin 05-11-2006 10:59 PM

4.21.98 Tabernacle *** 1/2

Some real inspired, early versions of the BTCS material (Hallloween and Rapunzel)- not to mention some awesome versions of Two Step, Recently, Crash with the improv "Humpty Dumpty" outro, even Too Much with a different guitar part.

bsan83 05-11-2006 11:02 PM

First time I listened to a full show in a long time the other day:

10.5.04 -- ****

Outstanding show, probably the best of '04. Set flows absolutely wonderfully. Typical in particular is absolutely nailed. Great end of the set with Hello Again/Watchtower featuring Leon Mobley and Ben Harper. Just an evil sounding intro to DDTW to kick off the encore. Great listen all around.

yeah, but I like Billies. The intro to Satellite was a bit different too. I give points for that. I agree on monkey. I've heard two since then...NONE have topped it.

Fan#41 05-11-2006 11:44 PM

Every now and again I'll go back to this show because I forget just how good it was.

9/28/94 - ***** (Easily)

'94 was a fairly standard year with just about every show having the same vibe, same energy, similar sets(obviously), but there are a few gems tucked away in 1994 that speak volumes of how far the band progressed. 3/26, 7/28, 8/13, 8/20, and 9/28 are all perfect examples.

Of course as everyone knows 9/28/94 is the UTTAD release party show and it was also the last time DMB would play one of thier landmark venues, The Floodzone. A fantastic Jimi Thing, a smokin' WWYS("this song's about a fat goose!"), a really smooth PFWYG and one of the finest/best performances of Minarets and Recently to date. The encore is one that we all look to when pointing out the possibilities that could arise from just mixing it up a bit

-------
One Sweet World
Halloween --->
Ants Marching tease --->
Halloween (reprise) --->
Ants Marching

9/28/94 is one of those perfect shows that even when comparing it to a louder more musicaly matured and tighter band of the latter years, this show still stacks up and holds it's own against solid performances from recent years.

07/02/04 ****

Opening with Pig (debut of the tour) and seguing into the Stone was the best 1 2 punch to start a show. This is followed by a Don't Drink the Water with, what I believe, is the most solid outro Dave has performed. Then into Sugar Will....

Throw in a Recently, Good Good Time, and Hello Again with the first drum solo, Ants closer, and BOWA --> Billies Encore and you got yourself a dandy show. Only weak point in the set was WTWE, else this would be a 5 star IMO

3/31/03
Millette Hall
Oxford, OH
Dave & Tim

*** 3/4 (would be higher if it weren't for the crowd)

Amazing D+T show. Some stellar performances and, in one instance, one hell of a recovery from a trainwreck of a song.

Bartender opening D+T style is perfect. It sets a great mood that hangs over the set (too bad the douchebags of Miami U don't understand "mellow."). Nice surprise appearance of BOWA and I'm a big fan of BEF D+T style. Strong showings from the staples (Stone, LIOG, Two Step, DDTW, Jimi, Ants, etc.). You can't go wrong with a D+T Stay or Leave either.

The show marked a few highlight moments of mention:
First show to ever feature two covers of the same artist (Maker & Wynonna)
It was the first show to get a FULL Blue Water since Feb. '97
The crash and recovery of Christmas Song actually made the song
The jam for Crush was outstanding
Solid Nancies with the drunk man intro to wrap it all up

WORST crowd I've ever been a part of. This was truly an outstanding show, but the crowd knocks it down a few notches b/c, no matter whose tape you have, the crowd's very prevelant and asshole-ish. But the quality of the show itself makes the tape a great listen. I pray that, should we ever get a series of D+T shows released on SBD, this show makes the cut. Phenomenal.

Good review - I was there too - that crowd sucked so hard, this bitch in front of me would consistently let loose a blood curdling scream for no reason at all. Asked her to stop - and she told me she paid just as much as me to get in and she can do what she wants. Ugh.

Looks sick - what a great trio to open the show with.

Funny - 9 shows in and no DDTW's, one of my favorite live songs :-( 6 chances this summer, and damnit, I will see it.

celluloid hero 05-12-2006 10:14 PM

9.7.2002 - *** 3/4 the meat of the show is actually a bit better than 9.8, IMO. Stupid WYA encore... I really liked this show. I did listen to the official release, that helped for sure. The mix is a lot better on the boxset than the highlights it seems.
