It’s not fair to blame all the post 2011 sound gripes on Boyd. If that were true, the band would have sounded great in 2018…and they did not.

I think that could also be blamed almost entirely on Boyd fallout. Took them a year to get their legs under them.

Well they definitely had to scramble to find a new touring member which takes time to integrate. However I would add that Rashawn became more prevalent at Jeff’s expense starting in 2012 and also that Tim needs to tone it down sometimes. That whole “wall of sound” garbage was at its height 2012-16. Maybe partially to drown out Boyd but not totally.

Starting the final show of the Fall International 2015 tour. 11/13/15. DMB is finishing up in Ireland. Big Eyed Fish opener. Once again, the band has an energy that I find irresistible. These stellar tapes (mostly from Noam Yemini) don't hurt either. Yeah, this tour hasn't had as much song variety in terms of deep cuts. But the songs chosen have been nearly all winners. Like Granny, which is up next.

This Minarets is tight.

And the tour ends with Two Step! :rawk

I always go back to that 2010 video of Boyd not knowing his Big Eyed Fish part and Dave trying to teach him on the fly. I feel like at that point, the band knew Boyd was the crutch and Tim and Rashawn started over-the-top overcompensating.

This is, all of course, conjecture and opinion.

Never saw that vid, but yeah, Boyd was clearly a mess for a while, the band did a good job keeping it under the radar for as long as they did. It's not easy to let an original founding member go, but that whole scandal gave them the excuse they needed. If you listen to some '14/'15 shows, Dave tears into Boyd pretty good at a few shows during the acoustic sets...almost implying that he never practices and that they're surprised he actually showed up. I forgot which show exactly but Dave says something into the mic like "oh, Boyd, nice of you to finally join us. We don't usually see him much until right until we hit the stage."

ThememanXX 10-28-2021 03:56 PM

Around 5:30; but I also remember there being other parts to this where they were actually soundchecking and dave taught boyd his part again, or am I mis-remembering?

A close to the LWS version as I've heard from them live.

Finishing up 5/11/16. I think I like how Samurai Cop used to sound. More horn fills, at least in this version.

A rare Satellite opener. Dave sounds good on this one.

:lol This little jam after Satellite:

I don't care if you're married,
I'm gonna ride you home
with my one-eyed sword.

Satellite opened my first show in '98. Winter tour in Toronto. Maple Leaf Gardens.

Beginning Dave & Friends 1/15/04. This Dave and Tim set is excellent. I never have a problem with Bartender opening.

Not even when it’s fully completely predictable?

patsfan39 11-07-2021 06:55 PM

Bartender is a premier D&T opener. It’s incredible that it’s just two musicians. I don’t have a problem with it at all.

gweeps 11-10-2021 07:55 PM

Gonna listen to a few April 1994 shows. 4/7 is up now. A nice little show. All these sets in this stretch are smaller.

Two Step :segue Ants is a sweet ass start. Then again, almost every song was excellent back then.

LIOG D&T 2/20/97
Minarets 2/22/94
Blue Water (Ft. Warren Haynes) 8/19/93
Typical Situation 2/22/94
Squirm 6/7/13

gweeps 11-12-2021 01:25 AM

Onto 4/8/94. Recently should not just be played more often, but should also open shows.

God, I miss the instrumental intro to OSW. Thankfully Dave remembers it sometimes; he played it last year.

gweeps 11-15-2021 07:50 AM

From 9/21/07 (split-stack source)

You Never Know
Two Step
Fool to Think
Eh Hee
The Dreaming Tree
Corn Bread
Bartender

gweeps 11-17-2021 12:50 AM

Beginning 4/9/94. Seek Up opener. This is an opener! Roi is lively. Outro is fiery. Just the 5 guys. Love this song.

I think the tape is out of tune slightly speedwise with Dave's guitar. Makes it sound like he's tuning/playing a banjo at times. Or maybe that's Boyd plucking? Could be both. :lol

Love the little frills and fills Carter adds to songs, like Recently. Shame he doesn't do this as much anymore.

Roi on this One Sweet World intro. :nod

This Two Step :segue Ants Marching ending is great.
