I could see it getting played, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Assuming there will be no repeats or at least very minimum amount of them, and given what's off the table already, tonight has no reason to be a letdown, no excuses given what's left.

4-5 CT Songs

One Sweet World

Spoon if Brandi is actually showing up + Come Tomorrow with her.

I think it'll end up being the weakest of the 3 nights but wish I was there still. Have fun everyone!

just turned it on - wtf is going on onstage now LOL

drh424s 09-02-2018 10:41 PM

there's 90 people all playing shit

Feathered 09-02-2018 10:43 PM

Wtf is going on right now.

That horn shit just went into TGIY for the second night in a row :lol

Garntd 09-02-2018 10:43 PM

this is what you use PHJB on? at least attempt an Iko or something

drh424s 09-02-2018 10:45 PM

I mean, yeah but that's the point. I'm digging it.

typsitch 09-02-2018 10:48 PM

let's get to typsitch already

Feathered 09-02-2018 10:48 PM

His voice sounds shot to shit.

I feel like this scope is flattening the sound a whole lot more than it should be. Need to listen to this on a tape to see if its as cluttered as it sounds on this, I feel like it probably sounds a lot better not compressed and in mono.

Tomacco 09-02-2018 10:49 PM

This is pretty awesome. Love Jeff taking centre stage with this whole band, looks like he’s having the time of his life.
This sort of “messiness” works for me. It’s all in key, and to the same beat. The overlapping horns is pure New Orleans band sound.

EGribby 09-02-2018 10:50 PM

I don't care what y'all thought about that... it was fun.

Oh I'm not saying it sounds bad at all, I just feel like not getting it through whatever scope my AppleTV landed on will be a hell of a lot better. Reminded me of the Roots version of She or the Jones CoCo of guests adding to the new songs well.

SeekUpAB 09-02-2018 10:52 PM

Such BS when they repeat shit for guests. Couldn’t figure this out the other two days.

gweeps 09-02-2018 10:55 PM

I think what people are really saying is pick good songs for guests... they did it last night.

Tomacco 09-02-2018 10:56 PM

Regarding the one repeat so far in three nights, I would be counting my blessings. This is a goddamn album tour. We are lucky as hell that they’re not playing several CT songs twice, let alone at all 3 shows, like every album tour ever (see Mercy, Bayou, Dreamgirl, You and Me, SMLAM, etc).
So far just one repeat and it was played very differently. I don’t see a problem.

Garntd 09-02-2018 10:57 PM

did jeff just tease Zona Mona?

Feathered 09-02-2018 10:59 PM

Oh we’re gettin repeats tonight. I just think they will try to throw guests on them if possible. Brandi on Come Tomorrow could be cool.

Tomacco 09-02-2018 11:00 PM

Surprised none of those horn players are guesting on Jimi.
But, early set Jimi is nice.

gweeps 09-02-2018 11:01 PM

Real early Jimi. I like it.

Despite Sexy Mf being old news now, at least Buddy has added a lot of life to it.

Feathered 09-02-2018 11:18 PM

I just don’t get why they don’t keep the horns out for jimi, if you’re going to ram it into 15-20 minutes of the show at least shake it up.

drh424s 09-02-2018 11:19 PM

ugh another repeat

Tomacco 09-02-2018 11:23 PM

Considering we got A&A, Can't Stop, and Come Tomorrow repeats n2 at WPB, this doesn't surprise me.

Here's Superstition though!

typsitch 09-02-2018 11:23 PM

Ew

drh424s 09-02-2018 11:24 PM

this set is terrible

typsitch 09-02-2018 11:26 PM

there was 1 person in the crowd who was really pumped to hear this tonight. 1 person. good for them.

drh424s 09-02-2018 11:28 PM

boy buddy can sing though - i had no idea

Tomacco 09-02-2018 11:32 PM

The song selection is about what I expected. Hopefully there's some of these tour rarities coming:

Captain
Hello Again
Big Eyed Fish
Bartender
You Never Know
The Stone
Drive In Drive Out
Recently
Two Step
Typical Situation
JTR
Best of What's Around

But, these options loom too:

Funny the Way It Is (dig it this year, but prefer the above options)
Cornbread Funny the Way It Is (again, dig it this year, but prefer the above options)
Steady As We Go
Hunger for the Great Light
Sister
Smooth Rider
Stand Up
Crash Into Me
Time Bomb

Tomacco 09-02-2018 11:33 PM

Didn't expect Proudest. Only played once this tour. At least we know Satellite isn't coming.

typsitch 09-02-2018 11:37 PM

chill classic drop

typsitch 09-02-2018 11:39 PM

timmy at his best on stuff like this

Tomacco 09-02-2018 11:41 PM

It is interesting how they'd rather repeat TGIY and Again and Again instead of playing B&BB and VITR from CT... which it seems like Dave hates playing this year.

Tomacco 09-02-2018 11:44 PM

Midset Billies is always good.
Figured that would be the show closer though.

Possible closers on the table right now:
Ants Marching (will be either set or show closer)
Stand Up
Watchtower
Halloween (seems unlikely)

drh424s 09-02-2018 11:58 PM

Two step as well

drh424s 09-02-2018 11:58 PM

Likely ants and two step

Good call, forgot Two Step somehow.

On another note: Captain is always a great inclusion. Dave messed up this version of She, which is a shame. This guest is doing nothing noticeable to save it. Pretty sure I saw Rashawn whispering in his ear his structured part to play. If you're going to bring a guest on, let him do SOMETHING.

Tomacco 09-03-2018 12:17 AM

The jazzy mellow jams at the very end of Typical this year have been an amazing addition. Buddy ftw.

EDIT: Alright here we go, Hamilton coming back on!
EDIT #2: Yeah, that's a perfect guest for LIOG. They're giving him all the usual Bela guest spots, and he's doing a great job.

greykitkat36 09-03-2018 01:10 AM

So yeah this is what a LOT more of what a tour could and should be--a few TDs, some changing shit up and some guests here and there. This is a really nice set, possibly best of tour.

I mean even if you hate She, this run is spectacular, hard to get more solid than this with a 3.0 set.

Proudest Monkey
Tripping Billies
Captain
She
Typical Situation
The Song That Jane Likes
Lie In Our Graves
Funny The Way It Is
Hello Again
Ants Marching

Tomacco 09-03-2018 01:15 AM

:lol Butterfly > Watchtower > Cornbread
What an insanely weird encore to end the Gorge on.
Kudos though. No real reason to add Cornbread, it's already 11:15 there, and 20 song set. Purely a bonus song.

Tomacco 09-03-2018 01:23 AM

The most common songs of the tour skipped at the Gorge:

Crash Into Me (13 plays)
The Space Between (12 plays)
Granny (11 plays)
Sister (10 plays)
Stand Up (10 plays)
Best of What's Around (7 plays)
Recently (7 plays)
Steady As We Go (6 plays)

Most of those are ones none of us want to hear, so that's good thing. No Crash is pretty shocking though.

The catalogue is just too big now. I'm sure people would've wanted JTR, YNK, BEF, Bartender, Recently, Stone, Two Step, and BOWA this weekend. But they wound up getting Last Stop unexpectedly, plus Minarets, Seek Up, Captain, Hello Again, Raven, Grace, and LLD instead. Those are definitely wins. You can't have it all though, sadly.

Personally, I think the Gorge was a great run. They only had two repeats, and only Again & Again actually felt like it, given all the guests on TGIY. If this were any album tour in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2009 or 2012, you'd have more repeats than that.
They also skirted all of HFGTL, SAWG, Stand Up, Time Bomb, Gravedigger, Crash, Smooth Rider, and Sister, which is a minor miracle in 3 nights.

It's also just a good year for performances. Having recently listened to Live Trax 44, it stands out how much better the band sounds at the Gorge this year than in 2016. Jazzier, more inspired, a little slower and varied in sonic textures. That LT44 show has an A+ setlist, but I never feel like listening to it because the performances are just more frantic and sloppy.

gweeps 09-03-2018 01:48 AM

Butterfly/Aatw/Cornbread for the encore? :wtf

But I still hope we get this as a sbd someday.

Tomacco 09-03-2018 01:50 AM

Sidenote: I love how DMB's YouTube page is preserving this summer's live webcasts, and even time-stamping each song in the setlist in the Description. That's a nice extra-mile for somebody like me who missed it live, but wants to catch up on a handful of songs.

Well VITR caused a bathroom/beer run exodus. But I agree, it’s puzzling black and bluebird was played exactly one time. And it’s not just because it was an old song put on the album...can’t stop was played 26 times and idea of you 10.

Josh.0 09-03-2018 07:35 AM

Cornbread closing the weekend is a kick in the nuts but I actually agree with Tamby, I like the randomness.

patsfan39 09-03-2018 07:42 AM

Wait. Cornbread closed the weekend? That is absurd.

Jack 09-03-2018 07:57 AM

Thats a good looking setlist. Obviously the two repeats and closing with Cornbread is disapointing, but they closed strong.

Or how about All Along the Watchtower and Two Step?

SeekUpAB 09-03-2018 08:58 AM

Not super impressed. Looks decent I guess. Remember when they played JTR?

dmb2much40 09-03-2018 09:22 AM

I think two step is too taxing for carter now. They only played it twice this year.

Gorge never gets crazy sets because it’s spread out over three nights. There were still a lot of highlights this weekend, not too many repeats and they dodged some bullets.

willndmb 09-03-2018 09:31 AM

I would take this set over 99% this yr or in the last few hrs for that matter
Not shocked there were repeats but am that Two Step didn't make the cut. I doubt they planned on playing the set as wrote, those were prob suggestions and it was always pick a couple
Can't wait to hear the LIOG

That strikes me as “be ready to play these songs and I’ll decide when we get out there.” I don’t think they were ever planning to play them all.

WYA would have been a great surprise to end the weekend on. With Dave's new love for the electric I'm surprised that didn't get more plays this year.

Carter probably wasn’t up for playing Two Step (that one is Definitley his call these days I think) and while WYA would have been a much more interesting choice, Cornbread is a dmbfamily favorite and a lot more people like it than WYA unfortunately. I would have preferred it personally because I think Cornbread is one of the more overrated songs in their catalog.

I think I read somewhere that Dave is 6'1 ir 6'2--still tall and above average. I think the rest of his band is just shorter than he is so he appears taller. Kind of like when you see an NBA point guard on TV next to everyone else you think they are Tim's height and then you see that they are 6'0+

patsfan39 09-04-2018 09:16 AM

So I finally listened to the that girl is you with the preservation jazz hall band and I must say this is awesome. Easily the best performance of the song, and I hope it gets released.

I remember the first time I sat front row at a DMB show immediately being struck by how much taller Dave is up close than from even a couple dozen rows back. He’s not a giant or anything but 6’2” or 6’3” sounds about right.

No words how cool that was...the band looked like they were having a blast with it too.

imjustchillin 09-04-2018 10:12 PM

Let's not get carried away. This is still a ten word song that Dave put on a Band record and played all the parts himself.

Thanks for that link! It was absolutely one of the top highlights of the weekend for me as well. If they could bring that collaborative musicianship into it going forward I would be more optimistic, but that was clearly the top of the mountain.

BigVodka 09-04-2018 10:28 PM

I'm right where i've always been on that song. I agree with previous post complimenting Dave for getting so much out of just ten words. He didn't get too wordy on that won. What's the right amount of words for a perfect song. Good on Dave for trying a different song structure. One verse, love it

Much like Costanza leaving a meeting on a high note, that song now needs to be retired and never played again.
